my bov stays open!

help! i have a bov(i think could be ebay type) that bought with the turbo "kit" took so long to get turbo installed(bout 7 months) but at first it was hard to push open(by hand) a friend cleaned it out(got easier to open).... well when we 1st test drove turbo was boostin @9psi so frien cut spring(so bov would open easier) to let it open at 5psi...well when i got home(150miles) i was checkin out turbo(cuz it great to have a turbo) and i looked at the bov and it was stuck open. so what could happen if i still drive it like that? what could of happend? im still new please help me put my mind at ease!

some1 correct me if im wrong, but i think most bovs stay open at idle. try holding the trottle a little bit and watch the bov and c if it closes...if it doesnt close, i say new bov :-\

Re:my bov stays open!

if it's stiff enough it'll be closed at idle but for the most part it should be open in vac

why the ---- would you cut the spring to try and controll your boost to 5 psi?Thats what the wastegate is for! ::)

unless its a dual diaphram bov it will be open at idle.

vac in idle is 20psi. that'll open it up a little atleast. mine stays open a little in idle and when i open the throttle up by pulling the cable with the hood open, the bov closes as soon as vac is gone, just a little throttle.

i think you mean 20 in.hg not psi because that is physically impossible.

yeah i know i should get a better blow off(and im looking, check out want to buy section) as for cutting the spring ghetto-d did (he's on hmt) cuz we were in a bind, and its not "open at idle" it is open when the car is off... so i take it that the bov must be bad??? :-\

Re:my bov stays open!

i bought the blow off about 9 months ago (and it was really stiff) but i just used it(so it has been to long since i bought, to make a complaint) so for know i had to find a way to make it work(thats why the spring was cut) but the bov stays open when the car is off(and it was open the whole time i drove it home(bout 150miles) so i need to know how bad is that on the engin/turbo? i hope that was a little clearer...

Re:my bov stays open!

u can drive it with the blow off valve open, its kinda like driving with a hole drilled in ur ic piping... u jus wont create to much boost i guess. unless it closes under boost. and man u don't kno what ur saying... "cut the spring to make it open at 5psi" u mean basically u made the spring softer so it would open easier at lower boost. stiff spring bov's don't really open at low boost and yours wasn't adjustable so to adjust it u cut the spring. not a bad idea but atleast explain it better so u don't get flamed so hard.

I was having trouble with my ebay bov too... When I took it apart there was no diphram... I guess the intent was to have the seal created by the oil... Anyhow, I toss that sucker out.. and threw in a volvo bov I got at the junkyard for 10 bux.. Maybe you can go the junkyard and get a cheap replacement...

Re:my bov stays open!

uhm, you do know that you dont even need a blow off valve if you dont want. It wont hurt anything under 12psi...
