what brand flywheel is that? I bet his flywheel bolts came loose

Franknstein 06-02-2005 03:17 AM

Re: My boss's flywheel...(pics)

Honda OEM as far as I know.
Probably came loose.... otherwise it doesn't really seem possible to do that....

thats not a honda flywheel, honda never put aluminum flywheels in any of its cars. Thats def an aftermarket piece. Im gonna guess fidanza?

Re: My boss's flywheel...(pics)

I don't think it's the flywheel that caused it. Loose flywheel bolts would seem to be the culprit. Looks like they weren't even tightened down and someone just dropped the hammer on the throttle and from not being tightened down it ran into the bolts and then one or some came loose and fucked that thing up! Did your boss not install that thing or what cause how could of he not known that thing is aftermarket. You can see the thread marks in the side of the opening for bolt on the flywheel. From the looks of the flywheel it looks pretty abuse.

righty tighty.. lefty loosey!

lol, that will happen when the flywheel bolts are not tight enough, remember kids when the impact gun stops turning is the proper torque ;)

Thanks all round.

Pete Estremera, old skool Hybrid board member posted as Trickturn, and as pest on HT, went through two Fidanza's, did the same thing as that one did. Pete was not a dummy, torqued his flywheel bolts to spec, and after the first one got all goofy for no good reason he made sure to chase the crankshaft's threads with a tap first. No dice.

He forked over the 1.9 million dollars required for a Toda unit and never looked back.

own by lack of thread locker.

Tom-Guy 06-03-2005 02:56 AM

Re: My boss's flywheel...(pics)

Thread locker is theo-rectally not needed.

There was some discussion of flywheels being provided with coated fasteners, when stock uncoated should be retained. The coatings apparently skew torque procedure/readings. I couldn't get a straightforward answer as to whether that was what had happened or not, and promptly lost interest. :-X

LMAO

yeah i dunno about aluminum FW's, theres a ton of peope that have success with them but it still rock a chromoly unit from ACT. its a bargain at just over 200 bux for the 8 or 10 lb version

Re: My boss's flywheel...(pics)

I have both, 7LBS al and a 10lbs chromoly one and never had any problems with either. It doesn't say to not use thread locker but it's just a lil safety precaution and just safer knowing that it's there.

Re: My boss's flywheel...(pics)

ive heard that chromemoly units get soo thin in areas that they warp the easiest of all of them. I love my 8lb aasco unit, with replaceable friction surface

i got the 7.5 lb fidanaza aluminum flywheel, not installed yet tho :P is chromoly better material then aluminum for our flywheels?

Re: My boss's flywheel...(pics)

Well aluminum gets weak with heat

speed51133 06-03-2005 03:48 PM

Re: My boss's flywheel...(pics)

not only from loose bolts, but probably because the bolts were re-used.

i dont know baout hondas, but many cars use stretch bolts for things like this, and you dont reuse them for these reasons.

Re: My boss's flywheel...(pics)

I have a Fidanza Aluminum flywheel for my B18C for about a year w/turbo and I don't have that problem. I have never torqued down flywheel bolts to spec. I have seen them come loose on other cars at spec torque. As for torquing them down, AbaZ said it best.

Re: My boss's flywheel...(pics)

I have my fidanza installed for 5 month's now..in 4 different engines...Right now in a ZC boosted with a T3/T4 @ 13 psi.
I beat on it most of the time. It still holds up fine...I just torque it to sepcs think it was about 80+ LB.ft

stillnoturbo 06-06-2005 08:24 AM

Re: My boss's flywheel...(pics)

Just torque em down and if their used then I just torque em' alil more. I've never used brand new bolt, flywheel, headbolts,etc....

Re: My boss's flywheel...(pics)

Aluminum should be fine, but like with aluminum wheels, I'd suggest retightening the bolts after 100 miles or so.

It'd be a big hassle, but I prefer to do that than have my flywheel come off.

And for the record, I run an ACT Chromoly Race unit, it's sweet and I've had no issues.
