The most ghetto turbo kit i have seen in a long time. Xenocron look inside

So after some beer and cleaning my garage yesterday, we found some plate steel and an old fucked up 14b. My friend was was saying he was going to pick up a ford aspire for free today to ---- around with, and i told him we should remote mount turbo it. Well it ended up the guy wasn't sure if he really wanted to get rid of it yet, cuase the only thing wrong with it was it kept shredding alternator belts. Everything else worked perfect. So we didn't even bother bullshitting with him. My friend dj was like "---- it, lets ghetto turbo the rex." Before you get all pissy about wasting a rex, don't worry. The story behing that is about a year ago it rained really hard, and he drove it through a ------- lake in the middle of the street before he remembered he had a cold air intake on it. So he water logged the motor. We pulled the pluggs and pumped a ---- load of water out of the intake mani and head, then did a full tune up. Compression really took a hit. A stock single cam zc putting 150's in each cylinder. And ever since then, it has just gotten worse. And slower. He also blew his tranny and motor mounts and axles at the track all on his first run, and with walmart tires. So now it has a 4 speed std tranny in an si rex. The motor is on its last leg, it doesn't like the higher rpms that the 4 speed makes it run, and smokes some. So we were like ---- it, lets remote mount the crx. Well we got a replacement motor already lined up, so we went ahead with it. Poured some oil into the turbo, blocked off all the lines and plugged what we could. Then we chopped his old rusty muffler off (also bought a cherry bomb turbo muffler to replace it with after we pull the kit off tonight) and welded the turbo straight to his exhaust. Then we went to lowes and bought about 15 feet of 1 3/4 pvc piping and some various elbows and a couple rubber couplers. Hooked it all up in about an hour and a half. The only problem was the wastegate didn't have a spring on it, So we went to vatozone and bought a random assortment of springs. Hooked one up the felt like about 3 pound but it opened the waste gate at about 4500 rpms at half throttle, so we put a beefier spring. Didn't even get to test this one, cuz the turbo locked up completely after 2 or 3 runs WOT in 2nd gear. So all in all it cost about $45 and an hour and a half of our time. And nothing on it is permanent after we chop the turbo off and reweld the new muffler in place. Now that he had his first taste of boost, he want's to do a real remote mount setup. With a new turbo, a blow off valve and wastegate that works. So we might have another post in a little bit. Well on to the pics. I only took two or three but it gets the ghettoness across. This is definetly the most home made peace of ---- kit ever, but it was fun for the 2 or 3 pulls it made. Motor ended up coming out fine, Compression stayed right where it was at.

Oh yeah, specs on the car:
sohc zc
7 pound flywheel with ebay stage 3 clutch/ pp
Lightweight crank pully
headers

Ok so laugh away. Im About to tear it all off in a couple minutes so its going to be back to stock here in about an hour. Oh yeah, welding stainless to cast iron is hard, so don't hate too much on the birdshit weld.

with the level of effort you should have just welded the wastegate

Re: The most ghetto turbo kit i have seen in a long time.

yeah well the vids are gunna be pretty hard seeing as the turbo is completely locked up. Time to look for a new one. Also i made him buy a pvc coupler with a screw in bung for something else, but it looks like with a little adapting a 450 fuel injector would fit into it pretty nicely. Im thinking run a power and ground too it with an on/off switch and then use the coolant resovior to supply fuel. So at least some kind of management. If i can find a stock wastegate spring for the 14b that would be great. So at the local junkyard the turbo is $50 (if we can find one) and i a stock 1g dsm bov for $10 from a friend. Engine management will probably we advance the dizzy pretty far and dump way too much fuel into it. But i would much rather run rich than run lean. We'll see when he gets his next paycheck, everytime he sees that turbo he gets all sad. Didn't even get to boost it much.....

lol ya if your pvc gets over 1000 degrees and you have 1/2 a ton in your car and you were in a container.. then yes it would be harmful

In an ideal setting, 'perfect' PVC will start melting at 185F. It would take WAAAY more than 300F to burn it. At 3psi, your IAT's are probably all of 150*F at redline. In other words, the PVC setup was fine. Also, that size PVC is rated at 350 PSI at 73*F, meaning ~80-100 PSI at 240*F. A 14b has to hire a pimp to make over 30psi.

All that needed really was a $50 scavenge pump and an FMU. It would have done 3-5psi all day long for less than people pay for some junkyard turbos. :8

Yeah the next set up will be less ghetto. Im thinkin an inline oil pump (if i can find one, Maybe a fuel pump will work) and a oil cooler before the turbo, then coming back from the turbo have it hook into a canister of some sort, then run it back to the pump. So no need to take oil from the motor. And probably make a flange this time instead of welding the turbo straight to the exhaust. And if i can find a super cheap dsm sidemount ill mount that in place of some of the piping. Then maybe an fmu or the extra fuel injector. Should be a fun little kit for under $200 in total. I need to find a way to get the pvc to mount up closer to the car though. As you can see in the pics, it hangs pretty low. One speed bump and suddenly no boost....

i lol'ed so hard when i read this. Cool lil set up man. May try it out when i find a beater cheap enough to blow.

that is absoultly un------- believable i cant believe that work at all that is nuts fill the turbo up with oil then plugged it off that is crazy...but pretty ------ coooool...

What about the PCV ventilation? Do you have it just vented to atmosphere? Do you know that can shorten the life of the motor?

well now he (the guy who owns the car) just wants to turbo it regular. So next week he is ordering his turbo, bov, and ic. Im trying to convince him to get real engine management, but he is dead set on using an fmu. I think im going to hit up xenocron and see if there is something he can hook him up with for cheap. Maybe if he can find a deal on something better than an fmu he will go for it, cuz high comp + 8 pounds + fmu = cool piston ashtrays.

Don't know. Manually retart the timing at the dizzy.

imo... an chip kit cost 25$
it's easy to install... or ask a friend that has skill and pay him a beer or a playboy :P
then find someone with a chip burner and make at least a nice basemap for next to free...

this way, it's cost less than buying a pos afc and your setup will be mostly more powerfull and safer

yeah problem is we live in central texas. Nobody around us tunes anything. And he probably won't go for the extra expense of converting to obd1 just to spend more money. I personally think a basemap chip would be better than an fmu but he is kinda set in his ways.

Some people only learn the hard way. Make sure to make a vid of him blowing it up :y

but if he blows it up, i wont get to drive it......

lol i know the chip is cheap and if i practice soldering for a bit, i could probably put it in myself, but finding someone to burn the chip with a basemap is going to be the hard part. He isn't going to go out and buy chips and burner and a wideband and all the other stuff needed. Now if someone wants to burn a basemap or better tune for a zc on about 8 pounds, i might buy it myself and save him some money. Just don't want him to blow it up.
