mig welded headers..

how strong are the welds on a header thats been miged? reason i ask is because right now i have just a stainless manifold. its tig welded and all nice and everything, but i really want a header. only problem is for my car, turbo headers are 500-800 bucks, and ---- that. so i was playin around helpin my buddy buy some ---- for his 4g63 we're redoing. we picked up a pacesetter header for like 150. its just mild steel thats been mig welded. looks pretty good for 150 bucks. i did a little playing around and comparisong between that one and an old turbo manifold i had laying around for my car. ports like up pretty well actually. so i was thinkin about buying the same header he has. chopin off the 14b/16g/20g whatever flange, welding on a t3 flange, then chopping off the 4g63 flange and welding on my flange. i only know how to mig weld though and being that the rest of the header is already miged, i think it would be fine, cept for the fact im not sure how mig welds hold up on turbo manis/headers. my last mani was just mild steal and was tig welded and ended up cracking on 3 of the welds. so far i havent had a single problem with my stainless mani... but im wondering how the mild steel and mig wels would hold up.... think id have any problems? good idea? bad idea? what?

Re:mig welded headers..

should be ok as long as the materials are stronge enough.
remember whena manifold cacks its normaly the material next to the weld not the weld its self this is because the cheap material looses its strength fromthe welds heat

Re:mig welded headers..

I migged a portion of mine and didn't like the way it turned out so I just tigged the whole thing. I guess it depends on what kind of mig. Our shop mig is pile.

Wait. Are you talking about converting a pacesetter header into a turbo manifold. I don't quite get it.

Re:mig welded headers..

i honestly dont think that taking a thin-walled N/A header and turning it into a turbo header would work! there is alot of heat generated w/ a turbo which eventually will weaken the runners... this is why most of the log manifolds are made w/ sched. 40 tubing. the wall is like .125 thick to resist heat.

just my $.02

pacesetter now makes a turbo header for the 4g63, for all of those out of the know ::) (jk)
