Max HP on regular axels??

My brother's stock civic has snapped both axels a couple years back; once at a local picnic from being a show-off (simple, regular burnout launch at 2500-3k rpm) and the other side at the track on take off (burnout launch also at around 2500-3k rpm). Really dont know wtf was going on!

Looking at all these 300hp plus turbo'd motors, no one really has said anything about upgrading axels to those 300 rated hp ones or 400 rated ones. Not worth buying a pair of those that goes for hundreds of dollars huh? Then again, what was up with the above story on my bro's civic? Bad Karma??

1. Anyone got similar stories?
2. Any ideas how much HP stock civic axels can handle?
3. If I was going to join the 400 hp vitara / tt club, should I care to change my axels?

i dident want to read all that up there but i have a story. my buddy once bought a one of those 400hp axles. mounted his slicks for the track and as he launched his 187 hp b16 he broke the 400 hp axle and the stock one lived. just a funny story.

Stock axles are fine if you can pre-load them and dont have wheel hop issues

big slicks break axles

You wont have slicks that large

Re: Max HP on regular axels??

I launched at redline with stock d-series axles on 23 inch slicks and never broke one at the track. If you preload you will be fine.

Re: Max HP on regular axels??

Moving up to a 24.5+tire and axles start falling apart

Before they had aftermarket ones watching all the 10 sec cars replacing axles after each pass back in the day was kinda funny

I still remember a buddy of mine made 4 passes ripped every axle in half off the line on each pass.

Pep Boys got alot of broken teg axles back then

I would imagine civic axels, atleast the drivers side, breaking easier since it doesnt have a midshaft. Correct me if I'm wrong, but tegs are all equal lengths.

accord are hard on axles even with a halfshaft set-up

My friend's b18a1 motor, my brothers 95 LS, and my boi's 98 GSR all have a midshaft.

My CRX DX, brother's SI hatch, my 96 EX coupe, and other Bro's 00 EX coupe all have the long ass drivers side axel with the rubber balancer around it.

So I think it is safe to say that all B series motors comes with midshafts as D's don't. Would this also conclude that perhaps it is easier to snap axels on D series than B !?

Oh yeah, forgot about accords..

My 94 Accord EX coupe w/ manual tranny has a midshaft, but I remembered a friends same year accord 4 dr with automatic tranny doesn't. Difference between auto's to manual? I'll leave that to people with more knowledge.

Re: Max HP on regular axels??

Many d series have halfshafts

Just not ones from the states

How do you preload anyway?

beerbongskickass 05-19-2007 07:05 PM

Re: Max HP on regular axels??

Pull the ebrake with the button in, give it gas to desired launch, let the clutch out until your backend squats, then when the light hits green dump the ebrake and clutch at the same time while flooring the gas.

Takes some practice, but makes for some sweet and fast launches.

That wouldnt actually put u under false start would it? I would imagine while getting your back end to squat, the car will also shift forward a little before the light goes off.

my friend's civic made 400hp and he ran stock axles for like 30 passes on 24inch slicks and never once broke an axle

Trip the first stage light, then do what Pat says and you can let the clutch out a hair to pull you up to trip the 2nd lightwhile keeping the throttle at a constant position and using the clutch to 'pull' or 'hold' you not too mention if you go even further you're still 'O.K.', but deep-staging sucks for ETs and Trap Speeds.

I have repeatedly raped my ---- (500 whp) on stock prelude axles, and theyre still going strong. wheelhop and shocking the axles are what break them. As mewntioned: preloading is your friend...

NIIIIIIICCCCEE!!
When you said "let the clutch out a hair to pull you up to trip the 2nd light while keeping throttle at a constant position" - I will already be burning rubber from the first stage to 2nd light right? While I await the YELLOW, YELLOW, GREEN.

Staging lights to where it can trip the tree, not the acutal tree lights themselves. Ever raced?
