Making a log manifold...
 

Okay I'm making alog manifold for my zc and I'm going to make pretty much the whole thing. I just went and cut a peice of 1/2" steel and tomorrow im goign to pickup a new exhuast gasket so I can layout the pattern on it.

What size elbows am I going to want to get for this ? 1" or like 1.5" ?

Now please just try to bear with me on this while i explain.

I will port match the flange exactly to the ZC head that isn't a problem...but...after the flange where I attach the elbows, it is going to go from like a 1" hole to like a 1.5" elbow. Will this extra room directly after the flange make any difference?

Also, this is just going to be for either a t-25 or rhb5...depending on which one i buy. is this going to make any difference between a HF manifold?

Man, equal length log manis are so cheap now and can easily be snagged for under $100 bucks. No works involved, if youre giddy, do some portmatching.

Saves a lot of time, trouble. Maybe youre in it for the expierience I dunno, then I might think about doing it.

Yeah i want to do it just to make it. ya know what i mean?

plus it is only going to be for a rhb5 or t-25...

the way I look at it is that I can spend like $10 on the elbows and pipe and make it myself, or I can spend $35 on a hf manifold...and im almost positive that this will have better flow than an hf manifold

No such thing as an equal length log manifold for 1 and for 2 it wouldn't be $100. A good equal length would run anywhere from $700-$1000. You need to buy 1.5" plumbing to make your manifold. Thats what I used.

I know jeff has posted them up for B series in a thread someplace.. not totally sure about D.

Here is something that you need to take into hard consideration before you begin.. do you have a spare head laying around that will be used when doing the welds all the way around the flange and elbows?

If not then u will warp the flange. I've had a junker B series head that has been laying out for a while that I was gonna use to create a manifold for the teg, but I'm dumping that ----.. promised the head to tekno9998 (phil) whenever he comes to see me.

yeah i have my old d16a6 head that is laying in my garage. some guy wanted to buy it so i took it out and cleaned that ---- up but never emailed me back....


so that'll work out nice.

i guess the key is lots of test fits...lol

how are u planning on doing this nathan? Just angle grinding the pieces and then MIGing it all together?

yeah pretty much..my band saw will probably take care of most of the cutting though...

Nothing's wrong with it - that's how I did it too.
There's a local plumbing supply house here in Little Rock (Allied Supply)that stocks the T's and elbows - 2 T's, 2 elbows and a 12" length of straight pipe was $30. This, plus the head and turbo flanges should be all you need. Oh, and a mig (or arc) welder.

i might take it to a friend that lives a bit away but he has a tig welder so i dont know we will see when the time comes...

BTW... I got my elbows from a local plumbing supply store for a quarter of what mcmaster charge, try local before you order, you'll save on shipping too.

but are they stainless steel? I tried all the local plumbing shops and only found mild steel.

if you get stainless steel, don't you have to get stainless steel head and turbo flanges? I made mine for my t25 out of mild steel weld els, x2 T's and x2 90* elbows $35, BMC racing head flange $29, and turbo flange $10 (local machine shop). I used a 220 welder, and I ended up warping my head flange and had to take it to a machine shop and had then resurfice it. If your planning on keeping your A/C, and even if your not, its a good thing to only make the log part of the MF before you cut the hole for the turbo, so you know exactly how the turbo will set in there, you don't want it hitting your block or any of that crap. If I were you, make your own, don't buy a HF mani, its much more impressive when you tell everyone that you made it yourself. I made mine on a cardboard template to make sure I got all the T's and elbows cut just right.

No you can weld mild steel to stainless steel just fine. And next time you make a manifold bolt it to a old/spare cylinder head or a large flat piece of steel so it doesnt warp when you weld it.

i dont plan on using an hf manifold ever...

they are restrictive as ---- might as well use straws for my exhuast...

anyways i have my old d16a6 head that im going to use for mockups and i wont have any problem with mounting it and that ----

and there is no AC on my 91 crx si zc. lol it steals powah from the motah.

lol just a random thing...did you know that the srt-4 will up the boost 3psi if you turn the AC onto the extreme cold? so it adds 3psi to make up for the AC stealing power...the AC only robs like 5-10hp maybe and it adds like 30hp w/ the extra psi...

lol just a little thing to know

hey Jeff, what shielding gas do u use to weld the stainless steel or ss/mild combos?
