Looking for more top end. 3rd gear+

Ok well Ive been on boost for about 4-5 months now.Setup is as follows:
T3 .42 .48
drag gen3 mani
turbonetics deltagate
hks bov
jrc fmic
dsm 450's
uberdata with basemap by xenocron
Motor is b17a

Now my problem is this.Obviously the turbo is small.Im sure I could achieve more top end by upgrading to a t3/t4.Yet I was wondering if that was the only thing i could do for more power up top.It just annoys me when Im racing srt-4s and evos and I pull them by half a car until about 7000rpms in third gear.As soon as i shift into fourth theyre gone!Just wondering what the most effective ways for more top end are?

do you have 2.5" charge piping all the way thru? If you don't, that will help alot up top.

Re: Looking for more top end. 3rd gear+

my piping is ghetto.Mostly 2.5 and 2".You really think thatd help? I heard 2" was ideal for 300whp apps.

the turbo will help, get an exhaust cut out and bigger charge piping. I think the turbo will make the most difference. Youd probably notice a big difference going to a t3 60/63 over the 42/48

dyno tested... 2" piping on a ZC DOHC made 185whp, changed out to 2.5" and re-dyno'ed by coincidence shortly after, 198 or 199whp. 2" sucks for top end. Change it to 2.5" throughout and I am telling you that you will notice a difference...

its a friends, on those two dyno's ...8psi he tuned for 10psi later and made like 218whp at the last hmt nw dyno day.

I believe you and all but Im not too concerned about the piping.Like I said my piping is all more than 2".The elbow on my compressor is 2" and everything after that is 2 1/4 or 2 1/2.I dont think my charge pipes are a problem at the moment. Thanks for the input though.I need all the help you guys have to offer.
Oh yeah copy pasted this from g2ic turbo giude-[As opposed to exhaust system diameters where bigger is better, here bigger is definitely not better. The larger the pipes are, and the longer the pipes are (plus the larger the intercooler) the more volume the turbo will have to fill with air before it becomes pressurized, creating lag. But there is another side to the coin. If the pipes are to small they can prevent sufficient air volume from reaching the engine even though the turbo is more than capable of providing the required volume. Generally 2.25" is good to about 400 horsepower.]

Re: Looking for more top end. 3rd gear+

never used a 14b myself but lookin at its compressor map it is not meant at all for high end, nice small turbo for quick spool and steady boost till around 6k, while pipping might help a tad high end, the turbo is not going to be happy and the efficiency will be horrible greatly reducing that turbo's life. Just do your self a favor and go t3 .48/.60 , quick boost strong all the way to shift with a turbo thats meant for it ;-)

I have a .42 .48 t3......not a 14b.Yes I realize the turbo upgrade will probably make me happy just wanted some expert input.Basicly wondering if t3 to t3/t4 will be like night and day?

Re: Looking for more top end. 3rd gear+

a .48/.42 vs a t3/t4 is like night and day at the boost youre running on that motor. Id say your running it on the ragged edge of its efficiency right now. Even a t3 60/63 would be a huge step up.

Ok that article is great and everything but you asked for suggestions for making more top end aside from replacing turbo.

charge piping is a good top end maker in larger size, so it was a very applicable suggestion. Sure that 400hp car on 2.25" charge pipe might rip nice, but change that same setup to 2.5" and I bet it'd make more.

If you want another suggestion, you might look into intake mani, larger throttle body, and some headwork/cams.

i use to get some super top end with a T3/04E .48.60 but with stage3 wheels.

Honestly just get a cheap dry nitrous kit and jet small.Tune your a/f richer to compensate when its activated.A small 10-25 shot will give you the topend you need till you upgrade the turbo.Ive used it before on my own cars and other dsms.Works very well.

Thanks for the replies to those that did. What Im most likly going to do is sell my t3 either here or on ebay then use that money to put towards a new or good used condition t3/t4.I wont get around to this until late august.Maybe get some sweet charge piping and a new wastegate while im at it.Anyone know where I can find a nice 2.5" charge pipe kit cheap as dirt? Also trying to find an uberdata tuner in the south Florida area. >:D

Port and polish the head, that will make a much better difference than bigger turbo.

Port and polish? dry shot kit? You foolz are crazy :o Do I look rich OR stupid?

Im going to pay $800+ for 15whp?? I think not B-seires nikkuh!

Im going to throw some nos in my FI hmt kit? Hell no beesh!

Ill stick with the charge piping upgrade and the new turbo ;)

Re: Looking for more top end. 3rd gear+

Definitely upgrade the turbo....past 7k it's barely making boost at all anyway.

Re: Looking for more top end. 3rd gear+

You can clip smaller turbo's to improve the top end of things.

But you'd probably be best right now with 2.5" piping and 3" exhaust

accordepicenter 05-30-2005 05:54 PM

Re: Looking for more top end. 3rd gear+

he needs a bigger turbo flat out... i dont think hes gonna notice a difference with clipping, i think the compressor is out of its efficiency range

Re: Looking for more top end. 3rd gear+

Thanks guys....I know that there are so many varieties of t3/t4's......What do you recommend?
