Look at this downpipe flange, how can it work???

Ok this flange here, suppose to go with this IHI RHB5 turbo

looks like it fits the bolt pattern and the HOLE... but...

look at the wastegate, i'ts covered by the metal part of the flange.. now tell me, how does the wastegate open up if the stupid metal is in the way?

Re:Look at this downpipe flange, how can it work???

looks like a block off flange. Used when running an external wastegate.

ARHG!!!!!!!!!!!!! ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

wtf!!!!!!!1 now where the HELL am i gonna get a 02 housing

Re:Look at this downpipe flange, how can it work???

just drill the hole yourself for the wastegate

Re:Look at this downpipe flange, how can it work???

lol, i might as well make my own adapter plate style thing instead of wasting $$ for that POS

Re:Look at this downpipe flange, how can it work???

I think you are mixxed up with an external wastegate, thats whats going on. that thing is fine the wastegate gasses go through your muffler.

Re:Look at this downpipe flange, how can it work???

man this is messed up, i rather get a stupid 02 housing... damn IHI turbo

turboboy 07-01-2003 09:38 PM

Re:Look at this downpipe flange, how can it work???

from my understanding the ihi 02 housing kinda works the same way and doesnt let the wastegate open all the way....just drill that plate out for better flow...its not for an external since you cant block off the wastegate on that turbo with just a new flange(its connected to where the regular exh. gasses exit)

Re:Look at this downpipe flange, how can it work???

that will still work wtf u bithcing about..

or just get a hole saw and cut a hole..

Re:Look at this downpipe flange, how can it work???

it will be easier for you to modify that plate than to make one yourself. just have whoever is making your dp blow another smaller hole next to it and join the two together like a funnel. that's how the wrx dp are and they work fine. i had mine made similarly and no problems.

o2 housing? just use the hole in the hf manifold for the o2???

Re:Look at this downpipe flange, how can it work???

no!!!

anyways anyone recommend me a iHI dealer that i can buy the damn housing, i have enough trouble making the adapter plate and crap like that, i don't want to weld so much!!!

Re:Look at this downpipe flange, how can it work???

The exhaust housing looks to be pretty deep, if the wastegate flapper can still open (max actuator length) and doesnt hit the block off plate, it will still work fine. It may pose boost creep problems later, but, at low boost settings it should be just fine. Or, as others said, just drill a hole, and run a pipe off of it, and make a stock like o2 housing/collector. The factory o2 housings really work well, since they aim downwards perfectly setup for a DP.

Re:Look at this downpipe flange, how can it work???

you maybe right.. but i still rather get the factory 02 downpipe ----.. i can weld the actual PIPE but i don't want to drill or weld on the flange thing and mess around with it... can you tell me where to buy the 02 thing or where i can find it?

i have no idea where this turbo came off either

Re:Look at this downpipe flange, how can it work???

I could be looking at this wrong but From the looks of the turbo. The wastegate flapper door isn't divided from the turbine. How could this be block off flange. Even if u did put that flange on u would still be getting an opening from the stock wastegate flapper if not mistaken. correct if im wrong.

Re:Look at this downpipe flange, how can it work???

errr, did you read all? Its already been stated that the flange is NOT a block off. (I) said it looks like a block off. Yes the flapper will open but exactly how much, i have no clue...looks pretty shallow, meaning the flapper will hit the flange with little movement.

Yo if you have the flange already check how much movement the flapper has... ;)

Re:Look at this downpipe flange, how can it work???

I bet you could notch the back of the plate too for more learance. just make sure you dont go through the back of the plate. 15 min job to figure out if it works or not.

All I have to say to 2000vsm is this:

CALL MIKE at Sacramento Welding in Brampton,
and set up an appointment with them...

170 Wilkinson Road U 14
Brampton, ON L6T4M3 905-874-0533
Fax: 905-874-0563

These guys made my '97 Civic CX manifold/IHI RHB5 adapter, the flange, Turbo Exhaust/Downpipe Adapter/ Downpipe, intercooler welds and charge piping...
They have most of the materials needed for the job, but if you wanna save yourself some money, then you can buy a J-Bend at ETD (Exotic Touch Design), which is right across the street from Sacramento.

Sacramento welding should be able to make all of the flanges/adapters/welds in about a day for you...

They also do a lot of custom stuff for ETD...
Just check out their cars/manifolds to see what kind of job they do...
www.etdracing.com

2000vsm, let me know when you're planning to make all of the piping.

Re:Look at this downpipe flange, how can it work???

My car's NOT RUNNING right now :(

It's standing in my garage on 2 jacks...
I've bought a "colder" thermostat, 'cause my
biatch was overheating, but the thermostat that I've bought was the wrong one, so I'm waiting for the new one to come in. I've also taken off my wastegate, 'cause the IHI was boosting at 15 PSI and it can't stay like that.
First thing that was making it boost at 15 PSI was the downpipe fuckup.... The Wastegate Actuator Flapper wasn't opening fully, because the downpipe housing was in the way... it also wasn't helping that my "old" downpipe was a 1.5" diameter... it was lagging like crazy at 1000 to 2700 RPM. Now I've modified the housing and made the diameter of the downpipe 2.5", but it was still boosting at 13 PSI...
I'm gonna try modifying the wastegate arm with the "spring" method to lower the boost... We'll see how that'll work on Friday...

BTW: I know that it was kinda dangerous to drive the car "overboosting", but it felt pretty nice when I had the gas "half-way", and it was boosting at like 12 PSI...
It pinned to my seat, and the "whooshing" sound was VERY LOUD... (many heads were turning on the street)

BUT:

I'm not stupid, and I'm gonna lower the boost to like 9 PSI... Is that OK with the Vortech 10:1 FMU and a stock fuel pump...?
Did anybody else have similar "verboosting" experiences with the D16Z6 and the IHI RHB5???

88crxSi 07-08-2003 01:38 PM

Re:Look at this downpipe flange, how can it work???

9psi of boost.
10:1fmu
10x9 = 90

90 + stock 40psi
=130psi.. get a pump ;)

Re:Look at this downpipe flange, how can it work???

thanks for info, yeah i'm in scarborough...

i don't know, i basically can do the whole charge pipe thing myself and the adapter plate i just need access to a drill press and tap set and some studs... the downpipe my muffler shop can do it for $40 cdn, i just need that stupid housing part that goes over the wastegate, stock is better cuz it allows room for the wastegate to move. i think that's why you stuck at 15psi, it's blocking the wastegate flapper..

i can't do any welding or fab until my car comes back and i break it in again, stupid engine died so i got a new engine

D16Z6si 07-08-2003 02:31 PM

Re:Look at this downpipe flange, how can it work???

Sacramento can do the O2 flange thingy for like $30...
They did mine, and it looks just like stock...
And it does allow the flapper to move...

Hey Mike, How much do I need to spend to get a Fuel Pump that'll handle the 9 PSI?

2000vsm...
If you wanna see my setup this week, you can come to my house in Mississauga on Friday... I'll be working on the car for the whole day...
