log manifold are they any good?or waste of time
i just bought a log manifold an i wanted to know if anybody are using one an are they any good (searched nothing)

Re:log manifold are they any good?or waste of time
log manis are ok, they wont perform as good as a tubular but can be just fine if low boost or budget boost is what youre looking for, theyre really easy to build in most cases
|
Re:log manifold are they any good?or waste of time
They work fine. I wouldn't use one if I were looking for max HP on a built motor, but if I just wanted to run 8-10psi and have fun with it I'd run one.

Re:log manifold are they any good?or waste of time
Log manifolds are fine for most applications. They are really good at harnessing the heat from the exhaust since it places the turbo close to the exhaust ports.
|
Re:log manifold are they any good?or waste of time
there better than nothing ::) now how they compare to a HF mani/adapter plate is another question on how good they were made.
|
Re:log manifold are they any good?or waste of time
thats cool i just wanted to know.i am workin on a buget an i got a log for 20$ i thought it was worth a try.its a start for my first setup
|
Re:log manifold are they any good?or waste of time
somewhere online, someone sells a "kit" for a log manifold. i saw it once, and I wish i wouldve bookmarked it, but i didnt. >:(
anyone know who sells those kits. its a kit, all the materials needed to make a log mani for like $120 or something like that. you just weld it together. I would like to try to make that. |
Re:log manifold are they any good?or waste of time
I was actually thinking of going with this kit, for my turbo setup. http://www.honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=1029423
Mild steel, Log manifold, 2.5" 2pc downpipe, and dumptube. For 400.00 shipped seems great. Heard it was a pretty good kit. I only want to get about 270whp max for now on a totally stock b18b1, which I am going to run Uberdata. |

Re:log manifold are they any good?or waste of time
yeah, i havnt sent out the money yet, it is off of honda-tech. maybe i'll tell him otherwise about buying it. do you know anyone on here that is selling a kit like this? i just like it because it all ifts together and i know that, and it comes with all the bolts and gaskets that go with it. but i did think it was kinda pricy

Re:log manifold are they any good?or waste of time
I run a log manifold I made and it works fairly well. I may build a ram horn before winters end.
|
Re:log manifold are they any good?or waste of time
my log style works fine...I pull just fine on the APR chipped JETTA/A4/GTIs...hehehe...chip/intake...I can only see myself getting a smaller turbo...manifold works good ;D
|
Re:log manifold are they any good?or waste of time
Don't bother with that jgs manifold kit. I bought one and wasnt too happy. The ports on the manifold plate are smaller than the head! I mean WAY smaller and I put a shitload of man hours into porting them out to atleast equal the diameter of the cylinder head exhaust ports. They have this tiny hole with a goofy machined taper bleh. Everything had to be sandblasted to friggin hell too because they put this THICK coating on it. Almost like a powdercoat it was horrid.

Re:log manifold are they any good?or waste of time
What about this little kit, like I mentioned up top 8)
http://www.honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=1029423 For the price it seems great. |

Re:log manifold are they any good?or waste of time
WTF a log manifold kit?
It's 2 45's, 2 T's, and 2 flanges all welded together lol. |
Re:log manifold are they any good?or waste of time
so basically you all are saying that log manifolds are a waste of time and you should get something else?
|
Re:log manifold are they any good?or waste of time
No nobody said that. Just get one it's fine for what you want.
|
Re:log manifold are they any good?or waste of time
bbka is just sayin why buy a kit when thats all it is. thats all.
i wanna try making a manifold. :-\ figured that was a really easy way of doing so. |
Re:log manifold are they any good?or waste of time
good if u want more room in the bay
or if u wanted to keep a/c good for a cheap boost app. Wasnt place that did a dyno vs log vs ram mannys? |
Re:log manifold are they any good?or waste of time
A log manifold is gona release less heat into the engine, so lower underhood temps, and its also gona improve spool times, unless you have a built motor (even if you do) a equal length tubular is not needed.

well I've seen a lot of people that talk about them but never really say weather they were good or not.thats why I asked cause even if everybody said they were junk I would still try an use it .remember its a home made turbo if I only got 2 lbs of boost its still more then what I have now an there always room for improvement. it was only $20 so i got 8) |
Re:log manifold are they any good?or waste of time
yeah man, they are good. there was a comparison awhile back on log vs equal length. on a car with like 400hp with a log mani made something like 430hp with a equal lenght.
^ not exact numbers because i was prett hammered when i read it, but thats the idea. logs are good. |
Re:log manifold are they any good?or waste of time
I love my log style...I still had to ditch my AC...but that is another subject. it works fine...it was 200$ shipped and it was EWG ready and had a bung for the EGT. Considering how obnoxious it is trying to find a manifold for an F22b1 engine...I took the opportunity...especially since I dont have access to a shop that welds worth a crap...
|
Re:log manifold are they any good?or waste of time
Does any one have a "DIY log mani How To" web page put together? I know JGS will sell you the parts, but there has got to be places to buy the T's and 45º for cheaper. Will just regular hard ware store parts weld up nice?
|
Re:log manifold are they any good?or waste of time
You can get the T's and elbows from McMaster.com then all you need is the turbo plate, manifold plate and a riser but that is optional. I chose to use a riser as I kept my a/c. It turned out decent just make sure you get ALL the same material. I ordered everything in el cheapo Mild steel but forgot an elbow for my external WG. All the local plumbing shop had was stainless so trying to weld it on with the WRONG rod was a bitch lol. Building it is pretty straight forward. If ya can't figure it out SELL ALL OF YOUR TURBO ----!!
My HMT style a/c compatable log mani half stainless half mild hah! http://img37.exs.cx/img37/6551/000_1229.jpg |
Re:log manifold are they any good?or waste of time
That's a nice looking log you got there for being a DIY HMT.
|
Re:log manifold are they any good?or waste of time
logs make a decent budget manifold, but like it was said earlier, just dont use one on a built setup looking for big #'s
|
Re:log manifold are they any good?or waste of time
Nice looking log manifold Bizzar............what kind of welder did you use? I use a gasless wirefeed, and my welds look like ass...haha!
|
Re:log manifold are they any good?or waste of time
yea i have a flux core 175 and welds look shitty.. the slag fucks you up cuz you gotta stop and clean the ---- before continuing to weld..i'm thinkin about buying a argon/co2 tank cuz my welder is mig ready
|
Re:log manifold are they any good?or waste of time
well log style mani's are stronger in a sence and they are less suseptable to cracking than tubular but a tubular is going to spool faster and flow better. Alot of dsm guys swear by log mani's.
|
Re:log manifold are they any good?or waste of time
i'm gonna ask a quick question on your thread if ya don't mind..haha... anyone have a minimal thickness they recomend when making tubular manifold?
|
Re:log manifold are they any good?or waste of time
That was my first attemt at using a tig. Yes I fried the tip every 10 seconds, yes the welds look like ---- for a tig, no I do not care cause its strong as hell and got a nice burn through. By the time I got to the downpipe and exhaust i got the hang of it. I was going in the wrong direction the whole time doh. We were pressed for time ( I needed to get home) so I didnt get much practice. My buddy sort of said "theres the welder, thats the rod, this is to adjust the mask, have fun I'll be back in a few hours"
