Are lightened flywheels worth it on Civics
I have a 2000 civic si boosting 7.2 psi on the rich side. Of course my factory clutch holds to about 4 psi and then slips. I am looking at clutches good to about 300hp or little over. As soon as i get it in the i will boost to 9psi. I did some research and the factory si flywheel is between 15-17 pounds but i am not sure since i have not pulled it yet. I am looking at some that are around 7.5-8.5 pounds. So for 200 bucks more is this really worth it or just use the factory flywheel and an aftermarket cluch. I know that the engine can rpm faster but if it's only going to give me like a tenth in the qaurter mile i don't know if it's worth it. If you noticed a big difference with a lightened flywheel or if you put one in and it didnt make a difference please let me know. Thanks.

I think its worth it... But honestly its personal preference, some people dont necessarily think its worth the extra buck.
On my B16 not only do I think it helps life of my clutch but I think that it helps the overall health of my motor, lighter flywheel less weight to spin. I wouldn't go too crazy. I ran a stage 2 ACT clutch and ACT flywheel for roughly 4 years, no issues, no slips, no problems. Bottom line, is it worth saving for? maybe not, is it worth buying if you have the money. I think so, |
running only 9 psi dont waste your money. your not going to need 300hp worth of clutch as you will be nowhere near there. i could see the advantage of the flywheel but for only 9 psi dont waste your money.

you can have a try,it will not upset you

Lightweight dynamic rotational mass = more power gain than static weight removal. May not be worth it though.

ran an 8lb flywheel on my crx on the street, was running 200whp, it was such a bitch to get moving and it didn't matter when i would stomp on the gas going 60 already. i swapped a stock flywheel back in and i enjoy it.

IMO on the SI i would not go lower than 12lbs. the si has such short gears to begin with. on my old DA turbo setup i ran a 12lb fidanza and a gripforce stage 2. It made around 225hp on 9lbs with no problems.
I would stick with just a clutch for now unless you want to spend some money. on my current ls/vtec-t setup, i dumped my b16 trans and got an LS. Again 12lb fidanza and a stage 2 act clutch. But i have to daily my car and HATE sitting at 4k on the freeway doing 7mph. But its all up to you |
If you ask me, I'd stick to just a stock flywheel with the numbers you're pushing...Just get it machined and be on your way. I'd say you're at about half the power and boost that would make a need for modded flywheel
