Light Flywheel + turbo = sucks??

is it stupid to put a lightweight flywheel on a turbo setup? do you need the mass to make it out of turbo lag?

rotational mass keeps your turbo spooled. going too light will cause you to completely fall out of boost between shifts.

lowest id go is a 12lb

Re: Light Flywheel + turbo = sucks??

i got 11-13 pound flywheel in my b16. i spin the tires and bounce off the rev limiter to much so its hard to tell hahaha. i use to have a stock flywheel but i changed my whole set up so i cant tell you one or the other. i dont think you would notice to much of a difference but the rule is the closer to stock wieght the better. turbo's going to be making your rev's fly anyways so no need for a lightened flywheel unless your going for lower power levels.

i had an 8 lb...wasnt too happy with it..put the stock back in..

rpms just drop to quickly...boost doesnt carry over from gear to gear as well

Re: Light Flywheel + turbo = sucks??

When I changed my clutch on my B16 setup, I went to a 11pound act fly wheel. I would say it is good, I can go through the rpm's much faster. On the down side traction has become an issue in first and 2nd gears but I like that. I like it better than the stock flywheel w/turbo. But yah the rpms drop faster in between shifts but you get useto it and I don't think it is an issue.

I think alot of this is personal preferance, if you like to shift really quick all the time, a light FW will probly be to your liking...but if you want the motor to stay spinning a little longer when you push the clutch in, use a heavier one.

Light = Quick spin-up but also quick spin-down of the motor

Heavier (11-13lbs or stock) = Slower spin-up but also slower spin-down (will stay spinning longer when you release the motor from the transmission)

Amen to that.
It is very much a Q of personal prefs.
