Default leaking turbo

Well i bought a turbo about a week ago and it seemed fine to me(big16g) it had 1 or 2 cracks on the exhaust side but my buddy said it was fine and there was no shaftplay at all. But when I was inspecting it yesterday i noticed oil leaking from the exhasut side of the turbo. Nothing leaking from the compressor side though so far. Anybody know if the oil leaking is a huge problem

other than the mess that will be over your engine bay and if its coming from the exaust housing then will have oil all up in your exaust back to the muffler and you will be loosing oil so doint forget to add oil

just check if it has some shaft play NOW. If it does, it's rebuild time.
if it doesn't, it's oil feed restrictor and ½" i.d. drain time!

huh. The feed line and the drain line are two different things dude.

#1 You MIGHT need a restrictor on the feed line to avoid pumping too much oil in the turbo.

#2 yes a big oil drain hose is recommended. ½" i.d. is what i use.

yeah try the 1/16" restrictor thing and if it still leaks, check if your shaft is still tight in that turbo. May it somehow lost it's balancing and put some premature wear on the bearings. When having it rebuilt, you can ask for the "stagger gap" piston ring, which is know to help a lot oil leakage problems.

last summer i installed a brand new turbonetics t3/t4 on a prelude with a nice big ½" oil return and a 1/8" oil line.

Well, it smoked like a pig. Huge nasty blue cloud back there. not even driveable.

I restricted the feed to 1/16" and after that, it was perfect. it still is, for that mather.

oh, and iff you got oil on the intake side, double check your air filter. if it's too restrictive, it causes the compressor to suck it's air, creating a vacuum in the compressor, making it suck the oil right out of the seal.

I found that www.mcmaster.com sells 1/8 female x 1/8 male .063 restrictors. It works tit on my car.
