Just got dyno tuned

Well today i got my car dynoed for the first time since i have been boosted.
the car made 266whp & 240wtq at the peak. at 18psi
seems very low for what it is, maybe you all can help me figure out the problem.
the tuner (JFK78) told me that it is more than likely my manifold and downpipe combination, in other words, my whole setup, lol

here is the setup:

Engine:
D16y8 block
d16z6 stock head
Vitara 75.5mm pistons
Eagle rods
stock d16y8 intake manifold
DSM 450cc injectors

Turbo components:
Precision SC50 turbo (50 trim)
.48/.60 A/R
2in piping from turbo to IC
2.25in piping from IC to TB
Stainless log manifold
2.5 inch a/c compatible dp
TiAL 38mm wg
TiAL 50mm BOV

The first 2 thing I would change is put a y8 head on it, and the second thing is get a ported z6 intake mani from Chris the mod.

Y8 head isn't worth the swap over a Z6

Re: Just got dyno tuned

What are you running for exhaust? I bet that thing spools fast as ---- with a log and .48 turbine though. If you can post the graph, that would probably help diagnose the problem as well.

Re: Just got dyno tuned

Exhaust size? Do you have the wg dumping straight infront of the compressor side of the turbo?

Get a bigger turbo or more boost :y

If he can get it cheap I say he goes for it. It has more to due with correct timeing then anything else, it will also bump his comp a hair.

For a boost appilication, the Y8 head sucks ass. The quench on them doesn't work for boost at all, and the fact that they flow like ---- is another. No way in hell would i swap the y8 out for the z6.

It be honest i don't think 266hp is bad for a very mild d series at 18lbs. yes he'd make more hp by swapping out to a .63 turbine housing, getting rid of the log, and going 3 inch dp. If he did those 3 things i would bet he'd get over 300 but at that point he'd really need to go to a good cam, which would give him as much gain as anything else.

---- it, just run some more boost......

Re: Just got dyno tuned

IIRC one of the guys on turbod16.com ran the same turbo up to 19psi on his z6 with slightly higher CR, I think a stg2 cam too, and made 325whp. I do think he had a 3" DP though, no cat, and likely had all 2.5" charge pipes. I think he also used a ramhorn, so like your tuner said, your whole setup is the problem :-X

Your best upgrade would be a cam at this point. New ones aren't that expensive, and will make more per $ than a stinking y8 head. Then 3" exhaust, 3" downpipe if possible, then 2.5" charge piping. You might even gain from a good fmic like precision, depending on your IAT's. The manifold may be an issue, but they are more expensive than the other options, and some people make good power with a log.

Since when do they flow like ----? Please show me :S; i'm no fan of any thing y but the main thing thats sucks on them is the oil pump.

i don't have flow sheets in front of me, but they suck. if you want more confirmation call larry at endyn.

Re: Just got dyno tuned

upgrade the down pipe, exhaust, and IC piping at least. But if you manage to 3" the entire exhaust, you should be able to replace....you know what ---- it. Replace that entire setup if your wanting more. Plenty of nogs on here to sell to

Want to his site and saw nothing, care to post up some real info?

I second that

Im a Z6 fanboy but Im interested in seeing more.

Re: Just got dyno tuned

Like i said CALL larry, ask him, he'll spit out all the info you need :)

i'm outta town and i'll see if i can dig up some info when i get back.

but i can tell you that, the y8 head was designed to increase tq in the lower rpms, one side of the ports on the intake is smaller than the other. It also has a curved intake divider which was also designed to aid in low rpm swirl.

If i remember back in the day, Zexman went from a stock z6 head to a fully ported y8 and lost something like 30 or 40hp.

wow. i'm pretty simular with his engine specs.

d16y7 block
d16z6 head
d16y8 intake manifold

stock rods/pistons.

didn't want to fork over the cash to have piston rods swapped out. i'm a cheap bastard.

and waiting on my taxes to pay for my turbo setup. i can only hope for 225whp (because i don't want to destroy my engine)

Good luck with that...

We ran the bbka tune @ 10psi @230whp, and it only took 2 month's to crush 3 of the 4 pistons ringlands.

mother fucker... i just put the motor in too..

now i got to fork over $400ish in parts the money to swap the pistons out. ugh i dread having to pay for the gaskets all over again.

how much power can a stock d16 rods hold up i wonder?

around 250ish

I dont think the log is an issue.

First Id start with as big a downpipe and exhaust as possible.

But dont think your gonna go places with that 48. Its a bottle neck.

Btw I think your #'s are decent. Plenty of torque.

Stock rods seem to be luck of the draw, as you saw Trevor's car made 230whp on stock rods, but the black hornet barley ever made 200whp and ---- 3 motors worth of rods... https://www.homemadeturbo.com/forum/...?topic=92920.0

Re: Just got dyno tuned

is he useing the y8 or z6 timing maps?

HomeMadeTurboz 01-11-2009 08:02 PM

Re: Just got dyno tuned

Both running different tunes.

Trevor's ran bbka, whatever timing map it is, straight off the shelf no changes at all. (not sure if it was a y8 or z6, but iirc bbka ran it in an eg, so it was probably a Z6, same as trevor's)

The black whornet, has run 15 different tunes +, and is always being fucked with, as what's the point of a car like that if you can't ---- with it, with that being said they have all been based off of z6 timing maps.
