Just finished sideblaasting my GF focus (3 pics)

in between daily turbo work, i decided to revamp my GF's focus in a HMT fashion, that is, using all kinds of parts laying around in the shop.
I decided to try an internally gated, watercooled gt2860R 55 trim and used a brand new XSP header that i cut up in pieces without any remorse to salvage flanges and piping from it.
i tried to do a 4-2-1 header to isolate cyl 1&4 from 2&3 all the way to the turbo but because it's not quite equal lenght, it makes the car sound like a wrx with all 3 cats removed. I love it.
Luckily, I have no story of install problems to tell. I basically started it and drove away with no leaks, vibrations or smoke. Once more, I'am lucky ass on this build.
performance wise, it's similar to the t3 6o trim at the same boost. Maybe the power gains would start showing up at higher boost? not sure. This turbo is rated for 310 HP max... pretty close to a t3 60 trim.
Still, it does make the zetec pull very hard to redline, which it desperately lacks when atmospheric!
Spoolup: SLOWER than the most basic t3 60 trim. Why? dead simple: Because the lowest turbine a/r available on these GT turbos is .64 a/r. as a result, you can throw all the ball bearings in the world at it, it won't outspool a .48 a/r t3. That, with the lack of rebuilding possibility, makes this turbo absolutely not worth it's 1000$ tag IMO.

here's some pictures. forgive the getthoness, it was not built to impress anyone, just to make the car faster (that's a success) and my GF happy, which i will measure tonight if you know what i mean. ;D

very nice, bb turbo should be fun to drive around.

who does your tunning on the sct, did you buy the proracer software

Yeah, the gt bb WAS in fact laying around for over a year because the stupid customer who ordered it, once he had received it, called to ask for a return/refund and threathened of forums bashing if i refused. Not sure why I accepted to take it back and bite the bullet at the time but I would never accept such craziness again. Summit racing does? I don't! You order it, you keep it. I don't ship stuff all accross america just for people to look at it and change their mind. My stuff is warrantied, returns for store credit only and that's all.

OTher than that, yes, the setup is made bunch of junk, notably, rubber couplers that are pretty thick, but not reinforced on the TB and on the comp inlet, comp inlet housing from a thunderbird, comp outlet from an EVO, old couplers and clamps and made only the top IC pipe from polished stainless because it'S the one that snows, and the other pipes are aluminized mild steel with a bit of chrome paint that I'm sure will flake off in no time.

sct Tuned by steeda. But the tune hasn't been reviewed for this gt28R just yet. They developped a working base map for my focus t3 60 kit with 42# inj and mustang GT maf and I am still running this map right now.

Does it look like there's a bracket to remove all the weight of the turbo from it? Well it does.

Yes, the the focus looks homo with that lip but with a chicks sitting into it, i think that's perfectly fine.

I like the manifold man...I see it is very similiar to the one you run on your Prelude...are there any specific advantages to running an equal length turbo manifold??...is it for quick spool up or more aimed towards making better power??...whatever it does, it looks DAMN good...

yea same as me, im running a base tune which is extremly rich tho. i was just wondering if you had the software for tunning. im looking for the dealers software maybe floating around the net. 350$ just for software is kinda pricey for me.

Yeah I do have the sct cd rom but it doesn'T allow for a complete and accurate tuning like we do with crome and uberdata. To make some real good tuning, you need to pay much more than 350$ I think. I will not pay for that. I have no time to tune. I have a handfull of good tuners willing to tune my setups for some turbo favors!

Yeah, I like the yellowish colour it took with the heat. Hopefully it will stay like that.
isolating the 1&4 from the 2&3 in theory prevents the pressure wave that is supposedly traveling backwards in the manifold towards the non-firing runners, which is a cause of lag. I don't see why they would impede power in any way and yes, this feature should make them spool faster than a similarly sized, but 4-1 header. I'm just trying to find out at what extent it does. I'm still experiencing on the best tube diameters, merges designs and all that. For this one, I tried to reduce the size of the single pipe just before the turbo to a smaller one. It helps, but I think next time I'll pinch it even smaller just to see what happens. Also, we have to keep in mind that the best header for a 8 psi stocker will be different than a 20 psi all out engine. Those who pump out jig-made manifolds like cup cakes won't like it but i'm affraid it's the case.

Here's some other versions that I made.
(Again, I am 100% aware that this is nowhere near the incredible quality of the tig welded stainless manifolds that we see sometimes from some pro welders on here. I'm just the turbo guy, having fun installing a turbo once every 6 month.)

version #1 version #1 version #1 version #1 version #1

version #2 version #2

No way to flip the turbo and send the downpipe (looks over the tranny) back? Just seems to have a sidemount and have the compressor face the ambient air. Nice work, regardless, G.

Very nice. Does it really sound like a subie? Cause the sound alone would be worth 500 rpms worth of lag in my book :y

Re: Just finished sideblaasting my GF focus (3 pics)

WOah!
i just spent one hour playing with it and Wow!!! This thing sounds awesome! at idle, it sounds normal but When you accelerate, it makes kind of a RRRRRRRolling sound. Will try to record it.
i don't understand why...i made 2 other sideblaasters on this car before but this one sounds so different.
Spool up is finally very acceptable. Feels about the same as a stage 1½ t3 60 trim. i ear it whine a lot and the 10$ bosch bov can be eared too, which is unusual.
i love this car. it's a great beater as it is. i can't wait to tune it better and up the boost but that's gonna have to wait because as most of you know, blaastperformance is moving into a new facility shortly and it will keep me busy for a little while.

That looks really cool hanging out to the side like that.
What sort of power are you making with that setup?

i don'T know yet the exact numbers but this thing pulls real hard. I have been driving it around for 2 days now, had it test drive by some friends, our guess: it does feel like around 220-230 whp. it's incredible how these engines light up at high rpm with just a few psi.
