jb weld strength
this may be hard to explain. but i will try.
the charge pipe i have to the tb has a flange for the greddy bov. i am putting a blitz on it. i had to not only remove the flange but also the little section of pipe coming off the charge pipe to the flange. the pipe is 2". the id of the blitz bov is considerably smaller. I made a cover to cover up the hole from the previous section of pipe leading to the flange. from the cover i will put on a new section of pipe leading to the flange for the blitz bov. i basically want to know if i can use jb weld to put the flange on the pipe, and that pipe on to the charge pipe. the max psi this kit will see is 15psi. (i am not going to start out at 15psi) but i want it to be stable to run that next year. if anyone knows if the jb weld will work let me know. if i dont jb weld it i will have it welded (i dont have a welder). that is why i kinda want to jb weld it. -rollmodel |
Re:jb weld strength
jb weld will hold just fine as long as you prep the material properly before you "weld" any contamination can keep it from being a good bond so clean it well.

Re:jb weld strength
alright.. thanks. i have jb welded things in the past.. oil pan..etc. but i haven't welded something that needs to stand up to any real psi. i know that 15psi is not a whole lot.. but i dont want to jb weld it, have it break and then have to remove all the jb weld. cause that stuffs smells like crap if you use a grinder on it.

Re:jb weld strength
It will probably work. As a noncertified autotech, my official opinino is Probably. But remember, there is nothing more embarasing than driving a girl around and having your bov blow off while racing a dsm.

Re:jb weld strength
Man, its a BOV and a charge pipe... take it to a place that does welding and have them weld it up.. JB Weld on charge pipes... definatly something I wouldnt do.

Re:jb weld strength
I think it will hold just fine, like the guy above as long as u clean the metal and everything, GOODLUCK

Re:jb weld strength
I don't get it, why do people on this forum use so much JB weld?
|
Re:jb weld strength
ummm....this site is "ghetto" so most of us dont have welders so its either jb weld or......... ???

Re:jb weld strength
duct tape ;D

Re:jb weld strength
i have found that jb weld works great when you have surfaces touching each other, like you're sandwiching the jb weld. it does not work well as a sealant to patch up holes (larger than pin sized). it also dries somewhat brittle, but i guess that depends on your mixture.

Re:jb weld strength
yeh
i guess it does depend onthe mix i guess mine was pretty good mine was stiff and wheni applied it it was kinda liquidy then i dried real fast and hard and it loesn't look or feel like its goin anywhere thats on the BOV pipe and intercooler |
Re:jb weld strength
how much would it really cost just to do it right and get it welded somewhere?
that jb weld ---- is pretty strong though. heh.. we jb welded our dryer door shut last year cause our landlord was a dick. he called me to make me pay for it, cause broke a crowbar trying to get it open.. fucker ;D |
Re:jb weld strength
seriously, like 5-10 bucks, take it to a muffler shop, the most they'll POSSIBLY charge is $20

Re:jb weld strength
think about it this way:
it's not just the pressure in the pipes that you have to consider, it's the area that it'll be pushing on. when people JB weld end tanks on their IC's which have, say, 60 in^2 of area then run 10 psi through it, that's a LOT (upwards of 600lbs) of force trying to blow that ---- apart. if you're just JB welding a 1 in^2 pipe on, there's a lot less force involved, assuming there are no other loads going through the joint. JB weld it, hang a weight off it that's about twice the force it'll see in regular use. if it holds you're good to go. another way of looking at it: there's a pressure differential of about 3psi between the top and bottom of the wing on a 747, yet it generates enough upload to lift the plane. why? HUGE area. same applies here.. if you're trying to JB weld something with a lot of area, it's likely not going to hold up. something small, on the other hand, should be fine. |
Re:jb weld strength
jb weld is my freind. I am there biggest fan. That schit will hold up bro. As long a you mix it right and apply on a clean and slightly scuffed surface you will be just fine. Oh yeah, And did ABAZ say he wouldnt use the jb? I thought we were big fans of the jb here. Guess some people blew up and forgot their roots ;D

Re:jb weld strength
Quote from Jeff/Abaz in the block posting tech page:
The pins are torqued to 2inch pounds.... YES 2 inch pounds, that's like hardly anything. Anything more could distort the sleeves. Be sure that the area around the pin hole is really clean, then I applied JB weld on the threads and all over the stud so it would stay in place. Larry says its not a good idea, but I think he said this just so Endyn wouldnt look bad "ya use JB WELD" LOL.. He recommend using the Devcon liquid Aluminum stuff. I think JB will work just fine. (we will find out soon enough) Seems like you aren't so anti JB, Jeff... hmmm? |
