Internal or external wastegate?

What are some of the cons of going with an internal wastegate? I assume the only benefits are maybe cost and a little less work?

I'd go external.

My internal wastegate worked fine for about 10 psi (creeped a little), but over that it's pretty sketchy. I would go with an external if you plan on running s decent amount of boost.

... and lots of junkyard turbo's come with internal wg's already attached. Free WG, cheaper manifold, good for low boost.

the way i see it, people with big turbos and low boost would need an external more, not just people running big boost. When you need to dump off more of the exhaust to control a big turbo, you need a big wg, internal or external. To be honest i think i would rather have an internal with an enlarged hole/flappper like a lot of dsm guys use

IMo it depends on what kind of set-up you are starting.

If you are going HF with a T25, well then go internal cuz you don't have a WG flange on the mani, and hte turbo comes with one.

If you are going to drop some money on a custom mani, well then go external even if you don't use it, you can just block it off easily, you can't add one on as easily.

with a die grinder, then you either would make a flapper or buy a larger one. Sometimes you see places selling exhaust housigns with bigger internal gates already...seen a few on ebay

Well, the 530hp Scooby on the front page of Japanese Performance magazine this month has an internal wastegate.
