internal to external wastegate?

This has been gnawing at my brain for i don't know how long. How do you convert a internal wastegate to an external. I heard the externals are better at controling boost and you get that awesome phhhhhhhhhhsssssss sound. If someone could tell me how to convert one i would greatly appreciate it.

How? well you can take the wastegate flapper out of the internal housing on the turbo, and run a pipe and weld a flange directly on to that... Or you can weld that hole shut, and plumb a pipe off the manifold..

You dont get a neat Pshhhh sound when running a open wastegate, in fact it sounds like a big exhaust leak blowing open.. I think it sounds like ----.

lol...... thanks for the directness jeff. So would i be better off with the external or the internal wg. I don't care about the sound ,when it comes to it, as long as it can do the job and do it well.

Re:internal to external wastegate?

Well it depends on a few things, what turbo? does it already have a internal gate? How much boost are you gonna run etc etc? Remember external gates cost around 250 plus all the flanges and piping to make it closed loop. I think internal gates work fine for anything less than 12-15psi.

Re:internal to external wastegate?

in this country (england) external 'gates are rare, we have always used internal w/g's .. even on 200mph 520bhp ford sierra cosworths (xr4ti with a twin cam 2.0 turbo engine).. ive never had a serious fault with them, apart from the housings cracking sometimesand thus the valve not sealing..

on another note, those external 'gates look a LOT like some of the "pressure reducing valves" used on the hospital sterilizers i service for a living...

Hell, we're running 19-23#'s of boost on my bud's T-3 equppied Fairmont. He's solidly in the 9's (9.89 to be exact) on INTERNALLY wastegated Ford thunderbird (garret) T-3's.
Trust me, save the money on the externals and use it towards other car parts (like traction) ;D

I'm not saying they wont work at those levels, because their are lots of cars that have some serious HP with internal Gates.. Its just something I prefer for controlling boost.
