IS this intercooler too big for a crx?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...RK%3AMEWA%3AIT

I'm just worried about teh height. its 9" tall and I current have a 5" fmic that touches my bumper support. I know I would have to cut the bumper support for this new ic, but it is made into my bumper and is how my bumper mounts to the body. therefore I wouldnt be able to get rid of it totally.....would it be possible to get rid of the center seciton of teh support and the mounting points remain in place?

What is the tallest fmic you have seen on a 91 crx si?

so if you have a 5 inch right now why are you swapping out?

its too small for my application and boost level.

its a t3 .48/.60 @ 12 psi
the fmic I have now, appears to keep the temps pretty cool, but not really cold. its cooler than my hand, but not a lot. I mean teh hot side of it gets pretty hot. if you hold your hand on it, it will burn you. the core on it is 15x5x2.5

id honestly go with a lsd motorsport 6 inch bar and plate...

im shooting for 400whp on one of those...

itll suit you fine, and dave, csaddict. just mounted one in his crx 2 days ago without cutting the bumper support.

did it hang low at all? mine sits just inside the grill right now. well, thining about it, I guess one more inch isnt gonna make it hang low. lol. I was wanting something like a jrc 8" or cca 8", but I dont have the money for that.

Do you think a spearco 17x6x3 (core sizes) would suit my needs? I'm on stock internals, so the boost wont be going up anyhigher than 12 psi. although I am in need of a rebuild(turbo), and may just upgrade turbos in teh process.....just an idea im tossing around...

The metal bar comes out, and isn't needed to support the bumper at all. Without it, your front end has the strength of tissue paper, though.

I ran without one for a while, then got one, cut it mostly away, and then reinforced the top 1.5" I left behind. I used it to hang the 24X11X4" FMIC... yup, 11" tall.

I'm planning on removing it and running a 12" tall IC.

If I were you, I'd trim the bar and run something bigger. Tall and thick get you further than wide... and most the ICs for Honduhs out there are wide and not much else.

well after a point in height, if the bumper is on,its not getting any air flow anymore.....right?

Joseph: do you think this 9" ic would do the trick? they say it has a .2 pressure drop and temps from 120º-28º. it soudns to me like it would do me well. Pretty soon, I'm gonna get thenew fmic and make a new charge pipe to get rid of the ghetto pos I have from teh turbo. I'm gonna doa pcv system as well, in hopes that my fms and rms will stop leaking.

Those intercoolers are VERY VERY poorly made and suck badly at lowering and cooling air tempatures. Ive seen plenty of those intercoolers int person, they are nice and big but when u hold the outlet up to light and look into the inlet side you can see straight through it. Thats exactly what you dont want. The more metal the air has to hit the cooler your air will be that is passing through and if u can see through it then there is not much metal fins used for cooling. Hope you can somewhat get what Im trying to say. I use to work at a shop and make intercoolers.

I ran a 8.5inch on mine

yea, I see what you're saying. From his pics, they look alright, but then again, it isnt held up against light to see through.

...maybe I'll keep saving for a cca 8" ...

Yup yup. This is God's own thermodynamics, although Full-Rice Geoff was arguing that the lower pressure drop bar/plate ICs were better due to less restriction... I loved that HT thread, where he got smacked the ---- down.

Keep in mind the OEM uses bar/plate units not much worse than the one you linked to... The GTi-R Sentra runs an 18X12X3" core - one of the XS Power SS Autoshite units, and at 19 psi on the stock T28 (300 whp range) the inlet tank and piping is unpleasantly hot to the touch and the outlet and rest of the charge piping chilly. There is a lot to be said for a tall and thick IC... and failing that some width to help act as a heat sink. If you can keep the IC as cold as possilble, it encourages more heat transfer. Temp difference means exactly ??? as much as the interior surface area of the IC - hot water stuck in the freezer freezes quicker and all that.

How much power you shooting for in the future? A larger, albeit "inferior" design, IC that is cheaper might work just fine for you.

when this motor blows, I will have another b16 block, that I'm going to be building on the side. the goal is to beat a 2006 z06, so I'll need about 375whp. mind you by that time the year will be like 2008. :8
