Intercooler spray device

So, my friend has a pretty good condition CRX he and I are turboing. Got most of the hardware, think we know what we're doing, etc. Anyway, I just was reading about the WRX STi, and about how it has a button to spray water on the intercooler to cool it off a little.

I was considering making a device to do this- just one of the pumps/sprayers like the windshield wipers use, with a spray nozzle mounted under the bumper, and a button on the dash to activate it. This might be able to chill out the intercooler a little bit, and add a few horsies. If nothing else, it's cool.

Anyone every tried this before? any thoughts on it?

not uncommon, better to use methanol than water though, and use a circular tube with more than just one or two holes in it to spray a larger area of the intercooler.

exactly^^ some water sprayed through a windshield wiper squirter would be pointless and would make no difference, unless of course the windshield squirter you're using has an led light, now that's a different story, then you're going to have to worry about traction though, b/c that will be about 100 extra hp

is it really worth it??
for all the plumbing and extra ---- u need i dont think it is..

just buy an air-water cooler..

Hey, I would just stick to the LED lights! I hear you get 5hp for every extra one that you put on. ;D :P

Get a CO2 sprayer :)

Re:Intercooler spray device

make a NO2 spray setup, get yourself a bottle, some line, a solenoid, and a piece of conduit, weld a tee in the middle of the conduit, drill the neccessary holes, and weld both ends. then hook up a switch, and not only will it work better then the rest of that stuff, if you mount/build it creatively, it'll be invisible too

Re:Intercooler spray device

get a fire extuinghser with CO2 in it.

extend the lines into the cock pit where the bottle sits. hit that button on the CO2. mutha ---- that would look cool

hahahaha look like your car was on fire!

bambooseven 12-21-2003 08:39 PM

Re:Intercooler spray device

don't they have powder in them or water or some sort of thing? i thought the CO2 was only a propellant?

shortyz 12-21-2003 08:43 PM

Re:Intercooler spray device

no its pressurized CO2.

your thinkgin dry powder or dry chemical..

co2 is co2 thats all.

co2 boilig point is -77. thats enough to chill your cooler down a whole hell of a lot..

good to know, what type of fittings are at the end of that thing? are they -----with-able? or is it a crimped on type of deal?

How about installing a nitrous system the normal way(into the motor)and instead of the normal "ricer" way of purging out of the windshield area so everybody can see, purge it onto the intercooler. You wouldn't even need to use the nitrous all the time. Just use the purge if you don't want to spray.

just cut the tube and use clamps and a nipple..
there is no pressure after the hand valve..

also your filter would need to be isolated bcs if any co2 got to the engine it would kill combustion instantly. (not hard)

Re:Intercooler spray device

I'm putting an intercooler sprayer on my Civic. I'm just using the windshield sprayer pumps. I'm tying the hose to the front of the intercooler with lots of little holes in it. The theory is that when water evaporates the phase change from a liquid to a gas is an endothermic reaction that takes in heat, thus taking heat off of the intercooler and making it colder.

the intercooler sprayer is no miracle HP device, its just nice to have becuase when your driving around alot its nice to have something to take the heat off of the intercooler if a race does come up. However, this should not be a high dollar investment if your going to do it

I twist tied a windshield squirter (non led since I just have stock tires right now) to my bumper to spary the radiator and all the water just dripped out of it without me tell it to, do I need check valves?

thats actually a damn good idea...have the option of useing n2o right into the intake or just for intercooler chiller.... good thinkin.

Re:Intercooler spray device

and hell, make the purge vavle tubeing into a circualar setup with holes...so it sprayes more evenly...get lots of bottle pressure and youd be good to go....imagin purging this much over your intercooler like my dude here in his z purges...imagine all that subzero n20 all over your intercooler...yum

we made one on my friends 95 awd talon :)

CO2 paintball tank, lines, and a nozzle (we used an on/off manual lever on the tank). worked good.

This guy posts on HT as DLB1994. That lil setup on his IC was good for another 30hp I think on the dyno??? pushing him over 450something on that H23. Looks like a damn refridgeeration coil strapped to the IC!?

I wonder if a couple copper 180 degree loops and some straight copper tube brazed together w/some small holes drilled into it would make a nice HM-sprayer?

maybe i'll try :D

yes it would...ive made a few actually...but i used 3/8 brake line...bent it with a bender, then punched holes in it. using a T, i connected the two ends and then attached a barb and hose to the other part... preaty damn easy to do... and it looked a lot better than copper tubeing would....

Re:Intercooler spray device

I just pulled my windsheild squirters out and cut small slits in the front bumper and ran the factory water lines to them, works great. Weither or not its worth in on a larger FMIC is another story. A lot of the "dyno proven results" look so good b/c the car isn't moving and the IC isn't getting any air so the CO2/Water/N2O makes a larger difference, but at 50mph the dyno would look a lot different.
