Intercooler questions...

i was wondering what is the diameter of the piping on the starion intercoolers. im trying to figure out if this thing will work for me...

my boost spikes at about about 16-17 psi and im just wondering if the starion intercooler is enough...

Re:Intercooler questions...

It has been said that the starion IC can make up to 450hp, but people also believe the new saab 9-2 areo is $24K, when in fact its more like $29K if you want the turbo model and options, well you get what I mean... right ??....

XXX turbo can support 600hp, but that doesn't mean your engine will make 600hp...

The Starion IC is a great/cheap option, but I hope you've figured in the price of getting the end-tanks re-welded... Since the IC is Aluminum ( not steel ), it takes a really good welder to them ( I tired, I failed ). generally its going to cost $50-$100 to get the end-tanks modified...

The stock inlet and outlet on the starion is less than 2'', so its definately not going to be "idea" for performance, even though my car did run 14.6 using them...

Just make sure your not going to spend more MAKING the starion IC fit, when you could have just bought a nice new "custom coach" unit for a few more $$...

Re:Intercooler questions...

thanx so much for the reply. that was really helpful... i think im just going to end up getting a premade IC...

i was told that the bar and plate design is much more efficient... is this true?

should i stay away from generic brands of ICs? the big name brands seem to be REALLY EXPENSIVE. im just wondering as far as performance goes...is it really worth it to get the name brands?

also...how do i go about selecting the right IC for my application?

i have an audi a4 and the boost spikes at about 16-17psi...

Re:Intercooler questions...

bar and plate are the most efficient.

As for the generic brands most people around here get Tyrus or Custom Coach intercoolers cause they're cheap, quality and can flow some power.

For whats best for you is all dependent on your HP goals, if you want high HP than get a Spearco.

A4 with an APR chip ?
My friend is into Audi/VWs. He has a A4 GTi 1.8T. It has an APR chip, greddy BOV, and filter. His car is BONE stock besides that. His car disappointed me at the track... I was thinking high 14's, but he ended up with a best of 15.6 !! Some of his runs were in the 16s !! It was extremly hot and we've planned a return to the track in the winter, but I was still disappointed, my other friends VR4 ran 12.6, so the weither couldn't have been too bad...

Anyway, my GTi freind and I talked about upgrading his intercooler many times, but he always goes back to " I want it to look stock, look perfect, and not have to cut any thing under the hood", which is a problem for me... He basiclly wants new/upgraded IC piping and intercooler that bolts up to his car (appliction specific ) and cost under $500 !!! Which is why he is still rocking the little side mount ( like the one your A4 has ).

My advice to him has been to get with custom-coach ( or have me call them ) and get the end-tanks built so that both the inlet and outlet of the IC face the passenger side of the car, that way, all we'd have to do is run a bit more IC piping from the stock side mount to the FMIC ( basiclly no bends required ).

He'd have $350ish ( give or take $75 ) for the IC, and almost nothing in piping !!!

But he wants the APR kit that costs $1100... But he's on a HMT budget, which ( again ) is why he still has a heat soaked IC...

Sad thing is that I'd build him custom welded Ic piping for free, but he is all about " looking like factory audi/VW stuff", which 9/10 times is " go slow " stuff, hehe...

Note his car is not a race car, its babied like crazy ( which prob. has a lot to do with his poor track times ), and is more a stock-show car...

If you'd like to see an exsample or don't understand what I'm talking about as far as the IC end-tanks, then let me know and I'll "photo-shop" up an illitration...

Not sure if this will work for you but I got one and the quality is very nice. Its a tad bit more than the JRC which seems to be popular but the core is bigger (read that as thicker). http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...RK%3AMEWA%3AIT

Yes its a no-name but none the less very nice :)

Re:Intercooler questions...

same intercooler i got, for my 90 accord, was a bitch to install mainly because of the 30+ inches across, made my bumper bend inwards towards the sides, had to use bars to push them outward......but...over the weekend i fix that.
being as tho i dont have power steering, i remove the lines that ran from the power steering tank to the front of the car were the condensor is (didnt kno they were PS lines, glad i move them) now it fits perfect.

i did everything to try to get the intercooler to fit right, without the bumpers tilting in.
cut, took out the bump support, put back the bump support, everything....and all i had to do was remove the PS lines sense i wasnt using them.
now bumper seats like stock :)

DAYAM!!! wanna do one for me?

thats myplan...

save some money and just get custom piping and a premade IC from somewhere..

as of right now i need to know how to calculate what dimensions are needed for my FMIC. after that... i was thinking about going to a local muffler shop and having them do some custom piping with mandrel bends...

at any rate...i could definitely use some info on this...

any help is greatly appreciated

My Tyrus is bigger than that and costs $195 shipped.

Re:Intercooler questions...

the end tanks on the ebay auction seem to be very sharp and square... i always thought that endtanks were supposed to serve as funnels to channel the air...

the ebay intercooler end tanks dont seem like they would flow the air very smoothly...

any thoughts on this?

and also...im planning on getting an aftermarket front bumper...should i get the bumper first and take measurements before i buy the intercooler? in my mind that makes more sense because i want to make sure the ic fills the front grille of the new bumper...

Re:Intercooler questions...

he seems to do really great work. however, i dont know why his FMICs seem to be really long...

is there a reason for that? they dont seem to be very high... just really long...

Re:Intercooler questions...

whatever its worth, i have the 5" core tyrus (johnnyracecar) IC and it works excellent! After ive boosted a few times i can tell a BIG difference in the temperature of the end tanks.. it seems to be a pretty efficient fmic. it fits my bumper perfectly.. overall im very happy. especially for $155 shipped!

Re:Intercooler questions...

does this guy make ICs with a bigger core?

i was told that i should get something thats somewhere along the lines of 20 x 7 x 2.5 or something like that...

we're lucky now, a year ago you could'nt find any nice sized front mounts under $275-$300. now you can find a good front mount for $200. shipped. as for your friend with the audi a4. can't you just make a front mount work with charge pipes that connect to his stock charge pipes without having to cut off his stock ones? he seems like a real picky guy.

That what I wanna do, but he's not bitting... He's about to spend close to $1000 on 2.5'' exhuast !!! I'm trying to get him to at least opt. for the 3'' !!!

I have another friend with buick GN that runs 10's, and he's the same way... They make fun of my ghetto stuff, then go spend $1800 on IC and IC piping.... I've got $2200 in my entrie car, motor, and turbo system ( maybe $2500 now, hehe ).

Re:Intercooler questions...

is it better just to get a fmic kit? my friends are making fun of me too for wanting to do a ghetto DIY setup. they say just get the FMIC kit... but its ilke 800 for the kit.

id much rather get an FMIC for 250 and get custom piping done...

but im feeling pretty anxious also cuz i dont know much about FMIC efficiency, FMIC design, pressure drops, charge piping and all that stuff...
which is why im wondering if i should just get the kit...

any thoughts guys?
