Default intercooler question, maybe a fan?

aight, b18a1, t3.42 .48, smc, logged manifold, 450cc inj. do you think that the dsm smic will be good for this set-up, i would like to run 10psi but dont know if this intercooler will be effective enough im probably gonna put it under the hood, like pretty much where the batt. was, and vent the hood, and i was also thinking of puting a fan on top of it.

sound like a good plan??

if you do a fan make it a puller fan, they are more effective. you could also route the windshield squirters to spray it with ice water. but at the track anything dripping will get you kicked out. you could also do co2 or other compressed gas but thats more expensive.

i had a friend do that wo/any fan or spray and we called it the heat sink intake.

a puller fan? u mean like a fan on the opposite site of the intercooler blowing heat away from it?

no u want a fan that is on whichever side that makes it PULL the air through the IC not push it through.

The thing I have to say about the DSM coolers is they've had over 20psi run through them and they've been down the track in 12 seconds or better. So I'd say they are ok. They do heatsoak though so a fan would be a good idea.

on the actual DSM cars the IC is infront of a tire with vents and louvers to pass air through it and away from behind it. He is planning on putting it in the engine bay, it will heat soak big time there.

ok, i need to set up my fan to pull air through the intercooler, why not push it through? isnt it the same concept(air going through it)?

Think for a second, the intercooler is a heat exchanger. It either transfers heat out of your intake charge if the surroundings are cooler (like air from a hood vent) or into your intake charge if the surrounding aare hotter (like an engine bay).

The more surface area (size of intercoller), or the higher the air velocity of air (what a fan is good for), and material all increase the intrcoller performance. The higher the performance, the closer the exit temp will be with the surrounding air. A fan will increase

And yes, you always want to PULL the air into your intercooler from the OUTSIDE air.

hood (vented)

ya try to position it so the air has to go somewhere after its gone through the IC. maybe down that hole where the stock intake was. Also if you run your charge pipes right accross the front of the engine it might be a good ideea to put some exhaust wrap on them to keep as much heat out as possible.
