Intercooler Piping

I was told by a old Mercedes racing fan that for the piping they used cooper tubing instead of aluminum, plastic or stainless, he says that it is less heat transfer then the other materials. Is this for real or is he just going the cheaper way to doing intercooler piping?

Copper is anywhere from $2.50-$3.00 a POUND. Aluminum is $.50-$.70 a pound. Copper weighs MUCH more than Aluminum and as for heat transfer, Aluminum is probably better and SS the worst if I had to guess.
