IC placement

1 Attachment(s)
I have a DSM side mount for my Focus build, and I think I have a place to mount it, but I want to make sure that it's going to get enough airflow. For now, I plan on mounting it as flush as possible with the bottom of the front bumper right before the driver's wheel well with the fins facing down. I wish I could get a pic, but the IC is back home.

This is where I would mount it.
Attachment 24801

And this is the position of the IC as you're looking from the bottom of the car. I test fitted it, and there's just enough space.

Let me know what you guys think. If it won't get enough airflow there, I'll just think of something else, or someone can give me some pointers.

or just save yourself the trouble and get a front mount

Looks good to me. You can always make a small upside down air scoop under the car to direct more air to it if necessary.

Yeah, but I got the side mount for free. Plus, I'm not looking to run much boost anyway.

Yeah, I was thinking about dryer hose going from some place in the front grill or something like that, but a scoop would be nice too. Thanks.

If you're worried about airflow, you could try a oil cooler/ trans cool fan and have if wired to suck air through it. Just an idea

Re: IC placement

Those things dont really do much will prolly do even less if its mounted like that, I would at least put a scoop underneath it or somthing

I don't know. Fans are usually only for moving air through a heat-exchanger when there isn't enough air flow - like sitting still.

I bet there's more airflow at 20mph from a scoop than any fan will pull through that tiny intercooler.

bitchasscracker 08-22-2007 08:27 PM

Re: IC placement

there is no way that is true. say a fan moves 1000 cfm its only moving it threw that small specific area where its needed. when a scoop is kinda putting it in the direction of the area of it ya know ?

if your statement were true radiators wouldnt have fans they would have scoops

god i wish my focus was painted,

i would just grab a front mount from ebay.

I didnt say the fan Idea wouldnt work, I'm sure it would prolly work better than a scoop, I'm just saying those intercoolers dont do awhole lot, Mine dropped my charge temps maybe 10 degrees, from 130 to 120 on a 80 degree day.

Well, for one, I don't have the money to go buy a fan or something like that, and I definitely don't have money to go get a front mount unless it's absolutely free. I'll just make a scoop or some ----.

word. how ever you do it you just gotta make sure you get air threw there. good luck with your build :-*

If you cant come up with $99 for a front mount, how are you gonna come up with money for the injectors and chip?

Re: IC placement

Well, I'll get the money eventually with my job here at the college. It's just that I have other things (such as rent) that I'd like to save my money for, so I'd rather not spend the extra $100 for a front mount when I have a perfectly good side mount that I got for free.

any intercooler is better than non at all so use what you got

Why bother having an IC if it's not getting enough air to work properly? I care, my engine cares, and my wallet/bank account cares.

+1

I don't know what the undercarriage of your car looks like, but maybe getting the 90* on the IC cut and welded back on but rotated 180* would make running charge piping alot easier.

Mk3 supra stock ic= cheap effective front mount. Fits perfect on my CRX.

PPl ------- throw those things away. Ive seen em make like 450+hp on a crap dynojet, so i think youd be square with that...

Dsm sidemounts suck. Been there. Done that.

No, I was trying to explain why I care about the placement of the IC.

Yeah, I think I might have to ---- with it a little to make running the charge pipes easier.

I don't care how much it costs unless it's free. I'm not paying any more money when I have an intercooler already. I plan on upgrading much later on down the road, and that will see some beefier internals for the engine, bigger turbo, more boost, and a FMIC, etc. etc.

put the sidemount in the front :P

I was thinking about that, but I'm not sure about room. It's pretty ------ wide, and I really didn't/don't have the time to take the front bumper off and see.
