I don't even know where to start
OK FUN STORY ABOUT TURBOING....any help here guys?
Alright I got a friend of mine that just turbo'd his 95 cx Parts list.... D15 motor D16 DOHC head with intake, throttle body, distributor, wires.....blah blah blah everything to get it to work. Regular mini-ram manifold SSAutoPOS Wastegate (but I know that these are actually ok...) SSAutoPOS Type "s" BOV Started with a ssautochrome .60/.63...with bad seals that puked oil...gave him one of my good turbos (.60/.48 turbo is good anyways) Some other random ---- that i believe I'm missing but I'll go along with the story. Ok he brought it to a "critically acclaimed" shop to put it on...turns out to be some guys that never even made a turbo car. One has a supercharged d16 if that says anything... The put everything on and it was puking oil...too small of a return line to begin with so they kept running it...killing it to see if it was "oil that was left on the engine" when it was clearly coming out of the downpipe. Eventually the cooked the ------- turbo and now his $300 .60/.63 barely even spins I took it out and took out the center and it's fucked....so I gave him one of my extras. Fixed that (while worknig at someone elses shop)...fixed the drain line and bung, and replaced the turbo and hooked up the lines....no more oil...no it's just puking out white smoke (gas) and it turns out the p28 that they were putting roms on was fucked and wouldn't rev passed 3 grand...so they put the stock ECU in and added a FMU...not as much smoke...but you can still smell the gas. So I leave...the kid couldn't put back on the ghetto ass downpipe he migged together because the turbo I gave had three broken bolts in the exhaust housing and he couldn't get them out....SO he actually took off the .48 exhaust housing and put on the .63 housing with the stock .48 internals...Now, I have never heard of this but it sure doesn't sound right at all... After the car finally "warms up" it hunts the idle no matter what probably jumps up and down at probably 1000rpms and does not stop.. So when you block off the vacuum on top of the valvecover the idle actually goes to normal...hooked that up to the turbos compressor housing. Also feels like there is cold air coming out of the bottom of the car on the passenger side which leads me to think there is a charge pipe leak of some sort.... The car is fucked and actually runs slower than what it did as a stock d15 (REALLY ------- SAD) So...any of you guys got any ideas for me to check out tomorrow? I'm searching for leaks as I didn't feel like it at 4am after I got off work..I'll take some pictures of the engine bay if thats possible...I just need some help guys..I'm really pissed off that this guy he paid to do the work when I believe I could have did better. |
Re: I don't even know where to start
What size injectors are in the car? Since they installed a FMU, I hope they used the stock injectors.

Re: I don't even know where to start
Tell the kid there is no hope left for his car, direct him to this website and cross your fingers for him.

Re: I don't even know where to start
If you knew better why didn't you help him, he must be a friend if you're giving him turbos and ----.
Or is it really YOU asking the questions for yourself? Hmmmmmmmmmm |
Re: I don't even know where to start
The D-series DOHC heads are notorious for crank walk and pushing out cold air underneath the passenger seat area.

Haha, no I didn't do the work...and the reason he brought it there is because he is going to the tire rack autocross event on the 15th...and I work at a steel mill 3pm-11pm and pull 16 hour shifts all the time. I went to the guys shop after I got off work and witnessed most of this. I'll check the IC piping today. Would the .63 exhaust housing be bad for a .48 turbine? |
Re: I don't even know where to start
Sorry...miscommunication...its a d16zc VTEC head...should I still reccomend the catch can?
|
Re: I don't even know where to start
go banana!

Re: I don't even know where to start
.63 and .48 a/r housings IF both stage one (which I think all factory turbo cars were) they use a similar if not the same turbine wheel, I believe the .63-.48 housng swap is pretty common
If you want to prevent blow-by I'd run a catch can Sounds like the shop should be buying you a new turbo... |
Re: I don't even know where to start
by law, if they ---- your ---- they fix your ----

Re: I don't even know where to start
if it's a legit shop
|
Re: I don't even know where to start
I didn't buy the first turbo...only gave him the second one. Well I figured out why it wasn't boosting...the coupler that connects the turbo to the IC piping wasn't even tightened down and the charge pipe popped out... Since the p28 he got was fried out, and kept flashing out the chips that were made he went with a missing link and FMU for now...gotta take it easy on it though the car is a whole new machine. Going from stock 55hp (i believe) to a .60/.63 turbo port and polished head.
No Idea on psi as there is no gauge, and he doesn't know what the wastegate spring is set at :o......He's gotta take it easy for a little while because it has a new F1 stage 3 clutch. Going autocrossing this weekend in south bend at the tire rack event...anyone going to be there? |
Re: I don't even know where to start
Man..You may want to rethink attending the autocross this weekend or running that car atleast....for all you know your boosting 15 psi on stock injectors.
park it until you get it right "tell your friend" ::) It'll be cheaper in the long run just to take a step back learn some patience and get the car straight with a chipped ecu and some tuning or if your gonna go fmu make sure your not boosting more than 6 psi I think thats whats safe for an fmu check the stickies at the top of the page to make sure. Believe me Ive learned the hard way a few times not with turbo's but with cars in general and dirtbikes don't Take chances and run something you know isn't ready. |

I already knew you can only run the stock injectors for about 6-7 psi with an FMU and SYNAPSE, so I told him to take it easy because all the xs power wastegates are usually set to about 10 psi on ebay... Drove him to one six motorsports the other day and he picked up another p28. It'll be chipped and running some DSM injectors very shortly...with a resistor box. |
