HP Differences Between B20VTEC and B20 NonVTEC?

Hey guys, since some of you guys have B20VTEC in their CRX.

I was wondering how much more HorsePower does the B20VTEC compared to a NonVTEC B20? Is it true that VTEC gets in the way when it comes to boosting?

i believe the regular b20 has aroun 147 hp, and a crvtec has prolly around 190. vtec getting in the way of boosting??

No, VTEC is a good tool to have for boosting. Allows us to stay safe in higher RPM.
The CRV engine by itself is going to produce a good chunk of torque - the CRVTEC gives you the higher redline, and horsepower curves with the reliability of one of the stronger blocks Honda has made.

You could get impressive results out of boosting just a B20B, its perhaps what my next motor will be.

yup me to.

The real question is, will it really last? Can the NonVTEC block handle the VTEC with stock internals? Because I want the motor to last on me and not just blow up like Jeff last LS/VTEC motor.

vtec is bad for turbo b/c it leans way out at the crossover. if you have good fuel management it's easy to correct for this.

all vtec is is a hot cam. more lift and overlap.. many ppl are successful with turbo vtec's.

i dont think that the extra 30 hp from the vtec cam will stress the block much more than the boost will. unless the vtec head raises the compression a lot you will be fine.

on jeff's ls/vtec the sleeves cracked. doesn't have anything to do with high revin.

what performance sleeve are out there for the B series engine?

golden eagle, buy a whole dart closed deck block, or you can do endyn posting (cheaper, easier, better).

jeff's blew up b/c he cranked the boost to some crazy number like 14 on stock sleeves.

Re:HP Differences Between B20VTEC and B20 NonVTEC?

but usually can nonvtec blocks handle the VTEC? I have known so many people around my city that has LS/VTEC, B20VTEC stock internals. And they usually dont last 3 months. Why is that?

J-SMITH69 08-06-2003 10:24 PM

Re:HP Differences Between B20VTEC and B20 NonVTEC?

cause they don't know how to build and tune an engine?

CivicSiR 08-06-2003 10:32 PM

Re:HP Differences Between B20VTEC and B20 NonVTEC?

So how do you properly build one and tune it?

They all went to shops that build it for them.

But usually how long will LS/VTEC, B20VTEC last?

Re:HP Differences Between B20VTEC and B20 NonVTEC?

you need a b-series vtec oil pump i think this is a biggie that some shops just may not do, leading to oil starvation thus blowing up. if you build it right and dont just throw ---- together it should last as long as any othe honda motor.

well since i have a B16a motor sitting here. I can just buy the B20 bottom block. And use the LSD B16a tranny.

Re:HP Differences Between B20VTEC and B20 NonVTEC?

One big reason crv/lsvtec only last about 3 months is because people put the vtec head on and think they can redline it at 7500+rpm when the motor shouldn't be taken past 6500 with stock internals.

Re:HP Differences Between B20VTEC and B20 NonVTEC?

jeff revs his crvtec to the sky everyday. even i did it. watch the bbq video lol.

the rod stroke ratio is bullshit. maybe on a racecar engine that has to runs 9k rpm ALL THE TIME. like constantly for 500miles or whatever.

hey random-strike, was that you driving that Jeff Honda CRX?

Re:HP Differences Between B20VTEC and B20 NonVTEC?

Hey, ask the guys why their motors blew up the next time you come acrossed them I am kinda curious to see whats up.

If you want a reliable motor, especially one you're going to boost, don't be cheap about it. Take your time to build it properly, I have learned that this is the way to go after having spent $4k on my Del Sol and blowing up one motor while not having a job at all :P

Re:HP Differences Between B20VTEC and B20 NonVTEC?

when you say properly build. Do you mean changing all the internals?

Chacko 08-11-2003 01:05 PM

Re:HP Differences Between B20VTEC and B20 NonVTEC?

yes, having it resleeved, oil channels enlarged (if possible), upgrading head internals, using stronger connecting rods, and pistons.

ZexRex 08-12-2003 12:39 AM

Re:HP Differences Between B20VTEC and B20 NonVTEC?

at the very minimum do posting, and a new factory headgasket if you want it to last.

then from there you should do pistons, rods, bearings.

i am gonna build a zc i have laying around but i cant afford all the machine costs right now.

Re:HP Differences Between B20VTEC and B20 NonVTEC?

Or i can just stick with H22a VTEC. A bit heavier than the B20?

Re:HP Differences Between B20VTEC and B20 NonVTEC?

The RS Ratio is a tad bit intimidating, when I first did my ls/vtec I was kinda worried about reving over 8k but I did it many many many many times, over and over. No problems and it had well over a Hard 10k miles on that engine. The only reason my ls/vtec broke was because I got cocky with the boost at the track, the map was only tuned for 12psi, and I cranked it up to 14 and I still had the stock fuel pump. Right now I have been boosting 12psi on my B20vtec for quite awhile, and it's working just fine. I'm even made a few pulls at 15psi but the clutch is questionable, lol. Stock sleeves are just fine, you just have to be "PERFECTLY TUNED".. what does this mean?.. a perfect AF tuned on a dyno w/ wideband and a very conservitive spark map, meaning not to much timing on the top end. (no detonation) I have no worries in my engine at all. I spin my ------- b20 8400 all day long. Get a vtec oil pump and a main block girdle if you can and your good to go!
