How well does oil flow through the turbo?

Well i wanted to see how fast oil was gonna pass through the turbo so i added some on one side but nothing came out on the return side?

is there supposed to be pressure?

what were you expecting to see? inside the center section its pretty large, and the oil oriface sprays oil all over the shaft and bearings. The oil return has no pressure, its just like runoff.

oh i mean does it need pressure to flow through the center section.

i think mine is clogged, how do i clear it out

if you just pour oil in it, its not going to flow out the return if thats what your trying to do

Carb cleaner, degreaser? I'm not sure if I would soak it though. You wouldn't want to piss off the seals.

I have a question, does tilting the turbo oil inlet roughly 40 degrees from straight up prevent the oil lubrication inside the turbo from working?

40 degrees is alot..

i woldnt do that.

also dont clean the carbon out, if it spins smoothly dont touch the crud inside.

I wouldn't spray degreaser in a center housing cause that just doesn't seem right to me. I would probably heat the ---- out of the center housing and flush hot oil through it for a while (kinda like putting it on a car). But than again who would want to go through this hassle? If its not broke, don't try and fix it cause you probably just going to ---- something up

eh, I've cleaned lots of junkyard turbos, I just spray carb cleaner and brake cleaner in the center section. I just douche the ---- out of it. Then I blow it out really really good, Then I usally just hand pump a couple quarts of oil through the thing.

One time I did this, and I ended up with alot of shaft play after I was done.. but that was just one time, and I dont know what happened, lol

I thought this was funny,

I would not worry about it. If it spins fine, with no play, it should be fine. After it is in the car, the hot oil will clean anything out, if it needs cleaning. I know when I was trying to see what holes where for what in my turbo, back in the day when I knew less, I tried the water in and outlets, and the water ran in and out fast. I could see it coming out the other hole. But the oil is probably different.

How many degrees from straight up is ok then? Also as long as its angled down enough for gravity to pull the oil through and into the return line, what is it about the midsection that won't cool right at a 40 degree angle (50 if your thinking horizontal at 0)?

On Whitey's TT setup he had them angled a lot and they worked fine, aske him, maybe he'll tell you exactly how much they where tilted
