How strong are B16A rods?

well, the time has come forme to replace my pistons/rings. I will be buying a set of cp pistons and rings in a few months. did a compression test today and got 1 2 3 4: 190, 225, 225, 225. I put oil down cylinder 1 and got 250.

so, I may decide to get some tunertoys rods or eagle H beams and fill the block. But first I want to know how much the stock B16A rods can handle. Could I make 400whp on stock rods, forged pistons, and filled block? If not, then I'll starts saving for rods as well.

Get some rods.

300-330 on stockers id say, other than that, go fist yourself.

I figured they wouldnt be good for more than 350. Just wanted to see if anyone else had some evidence or anything on the matter....

HCI (the car mag) just did an article on this, and i think the ringlands were the first to go, so the rods did hold up to something around 300 if not more. Although i'm sure day after day they wouldn't last long.

b16a rods and bolts are beefier than b18a/b rods/bolts, I'd say there good for the higher 300 range.

i agree, definitely pretty thick. i wouldn't hesitate going for over 350 with stock rods, too much more than that may be pushing it. you may as well just spend the couple hundred bucks while you have it apart and do it right though. i'm getting sick of seeing the words 'block filler' :P you guys should really do some searching on how much power stock sleeves handle, block filler isn't necessarry at all.

i cracked mine because i was being stupid, and you're just as stupid if you think the block filler will keep you from cracking a sleeve, the only thing the block filler will do is keep the sleeves from walking, which isn't a big problem at all with stock revs. it's not like it strengthens the material in the sleeves ::)

damn your worried about 190,225,225,225 compression? ha! my b16 throws down like 170,170,160,165....they are closer together than yours but they are low, and it still runs fine and rips hard as ----, your numbers arent that bad, i would be happy if those were my numbers, you still got a LOT of rippin' to do on those stockers....

Re: How strong are B16A rods?

his problem is that the numbers arent close enough together. your problem is that the numbers are a bit low. different problems.

LS are good for 300, and B16 are a litle bigger, so i would think they could handle mid 300s

heres a side by side, LS on left, B16 on right. B16 are noticeably bigger:

Does anyone have a side by side comparison like the pics above...but with d-series, b-series, h-series...etc.

IMO it would be awesome.

no H series, so this is the best i could do

PM7(ZC) - PR4(LS) - PR3(B16)

Id personally feel completely comfortable rocking B16 rods to 350whp of daily beatings.

Re: How strong are B16A rods?

the goal is 375whp, so I'm shooting for 400 after the build and new setup. :y

I wonder how the ITR rods are?

Re: How strong are B16A rods?

Probably the same as the b16's. Now if we can get Frank to get his hands on some 1G-GTE pistons then alot of sohc's can have a pretty strong cheap bottomends. I'll have to give frank a jingle. Not to mention with the addition of some ARP rod bolts it would be ideal for what alot of folks are looking for HPwise.

Re: How strong are B16A rods?

I heared that B18A(1) have bigger rod than B18B(1)?
Anyone could confirm that?

Has for your question, I did lsvtec with forged piston but keep the b18a rod for budget, now 1 1/2 years of 300whp later, I want more and the rods are what keep me from doing 400whp. When I did my build the eagle were the cheapest one, now you have the tuner toy's one. I say go with the rod for peace of mind, I should have done that...

Did you remove all of your spark plugs when you did your comp test. Cause if you have the other plugs in while testing each cylinder your #s will be lower.

And as far as b16 rods i have been thinking about that by self and since tuner toys sells them for about 250. it seems like cheap insurance.
