how do i measure or tell if there is too much shaft play in my turbo?

 

if the wheels don't scrape the housings, then its still good

1mm of shaft play is the max i believe

I've been playing with my shaft for years and it's still somehow attached.

If the fins hit the housing, it's probably too much. Keep in mind that when it gets oil in it the play will reduce. A dry turbo will have quite a bit of play(except for new ones). My turbo had a shitload of play in it when it was dry, but after running it that went away and it's fine now.

Besides, if it doesn't smoke, run it anyways.
