how to make turbo spool quicker...

right now i'm running 4/4.5 psi on a y7 with a 14b on a hf mani. i hit full boost at 4k rpm... i'm thinking it should hit fool boost sooner. is that about right? or are there any other way i can make it come sooner?

Re: how to make turbo spool quicker...

Sounds like your waste gate isn't shut all the way out of boost.

Re: how to make turbo spool quicker...

running such low boost causes the wg to open more at low rpms; that will let exhaust by and not give the turbo enough to spool

run more boost to get rid of the lag or get an EBC

Re: how to make turbo spool quicker...

even just a mbc will help spoo faster. if you can get it set at 4.5lbs idk how low you can get the spring in an mbc set at. but that ball won't move until 4.5lbs which will help eliminate your flapper opening "prematurely" lol

Nitrous.

i'm not using the original wstegate. i'm using a carb spring... ::)

Re: how to make turbo spool quicker...

Hmmm, maybe the carb spring isn't holding the wastegate shut tight enough. Sounds like it's doing it's job and limiting the ammount of boost you make, but with a small turbo like the 14b you should be boosting sooner. Maybe there's an exhaust leak at the turbo-manifold gasket.

Jeff did it before.

Anyway, how is ur exhaust size (exhaust, cat?, downpipe)? is the HF mani/exhaust housing ported? Check for exhaust leaks on the mani/adapter/turbo. When I open my cutout my 14b spools like nuts. And gets really loud/cool sounding. I have a 2.25 exhaust with a testpipe.

Re: how to make turbo spool quicker...

put more tension on your spring(move your mounting point of the spring farther away). be careful not get a surge!

projekz 06-11-2005 12:34 PM

Re: how to make turbo spool quicker...

i think theres a possible leak before or after the adapter plate. i checked it out yesterday... the spring works fine for me. atleast i don't have to worry about wastegate failure. ;) the exhaust is 2 1/4 inch so yea...

When you start getting 7-8 acceptably quick, but need 15-20 pronto - water injection. All that expanding steam, just like a turbine at the local power plant.

How to get 4 to 4.5 psi quicker? *sob*

i think i am having the same problem, i get full spool at 4500rpms with a 42/48 air research turbo on a b18b. i have heard those things being able to spool up as quick as 2400rpms. could it be how i have my mbc routed?

What size charge piping are yah using?

Re: how to make turbo spool quicker...

run open downpipe for one day, it will give you an idea of how restrictive your exhaust is being

personally i see 5psi by 3k with a 14b and big 2.5" charge pipes, 8" intercooler, and 2.5" turbo-back exhaust, no cat.

but i also use the dsm internal wastegate.

Another thing? is this car daily driven or just for fun
You dont wanna be fully spooled just driving around crusing do you??
It does sound slow but not that bad IMO

Re: how to make turbo spool quicker...

my car is daily driven... i fix the leak i had. its starts to spool around 3? and hit full boost a 3500. better then before but car still runs like ---- seeing boost...need more check valves... i hope the chip and the conversion harness is coming in today/soon... ------- fmu... ::) hey i can beat my cousin's is300 (has hks hi-power and some intake) ;D so does that mean i'm running low 15's right now? cuz is300 are suppose to be around 15.3 stock...

Re: how to make turbo spool quicker...

Why not just use a smaller exhaust hosuing.
A lot of guys just make the entry into the turbo smaller.
Instant results.

Re: how to make turbo spool quicker...

I would try smaller charge piping
My last set up was a T3 .42/.48
2.5 TB-> IC
and about 2.0 to 2.25 IC-> Turbo

my new set up im trying 2.25 piping

Full boost still seems kinda late for that 14b doesn't it?

Re: how to make turbo spool quicker...

From the turbo out to the intercooler best to keep the same size as whats on the turbo.
From the IC to throtel same size as your throtel body.

Re: how to make turbo spool quicker...

how big is ur downpipe. I used to have the most ghetto downpipe and it choked up the turbo bad. I now have a 2.5incher with a cutout if desired. I can get 4psi @ 2.5 and full 9 @ a lil under 4.

4-4.5psi? Thats ----- ----. Turn it up!

i'm not gonna turn up the boost when i'm running an fmu... i'm waiting for my uberdata chip kit.

What turbo though? Is that with JUST the DP or the full exhaust?

run the wastegate vac line off the intake manifold if you havnt done that yet. That tends to help you spool up 200-500 rpm faster in some turbos

Its a 14B. Actually... i probably get 4psi at a lil more than 2.5 maybe 2.7 :P

even still it can take a few more pounds

didn't read all the post, but you could use smaller charge piping to get the turbo to spool a bit quicker :)

how do you expect him to do so when his wastegate is a spring? :P

when i was running an fmu i was boosting 9psi and it was still rich... no fuel pump or anything... u might as well jus not drive it and see how it runs with uber. it feels different in every way possible...
