How good/Bad is the HF/STD Manifold?

I've got this 91 hatch that's my winter beater and I'm contemplating turboing it.

I've done 4 turbo setups before on previous cars and they were mostly all with brand name good parts. For this car, since it's not worth much, I'm thinking of going SUPER budget.

So I'm looking at this manifold, I have a air die grinder I can use to open it up if needed, I would buy the BMC (I think that's it, the guy from this site) adapter plate.

So like $25 for the manifold and ~$50 for the adapter plate. not bad.

Now, I'm putting Vitara pistons in the SOHC ZC and will probably use a T25 or 14B. I will be using Turbo Edit for management with larger injectors using wideband that's no problem for management. However, the compression will be really low on the SOHC ZC, not sure if those 2 turbo's can run efficiently with that much PSI with the STD manifold?

I guess I'm just wondering how much more worth it is it to spend the $250-$350 on a "real" turbo manifold? Never really had this option before of usint a stock manifold.

idk almost everyone running a real hmt setup uses the hf/std/cx mani so i'd say they must work pretty decent then. i'll be using the cx.

but ya if you've got a steady hand i would do a mild p&p with it. if you ---- it up your only out 30 bucks

goodluck

If it's just your winter I'd say the hf mani is fine.If it wasn't I'd say upgrade since you'll need to bump the boost pretty high to make up the comp drop with the vitara pistons.

Some site sells "weld your own manifold" kits for $175 and it comes with everything you need to build your manifold and its application specific.

You can/should port the ---- outta the HF/etc. manifold, its iron, so a steady hand isn't even required.

The manifold has a huge outlet, and the ports aren't that long, so I'd think the HF manifold ,while cheap, kicks ass at the same time !!! Kinda like paying nothing for a blow-job, BEFORE you reallize she doesn't have any teeth !!!

Also, never think twice about lowering your compression... My AFC hack car has seen 16psi a few times with 8.4/1 compression with no knock ( And I have a fairly small turbo ).

hey guys, i have an std mani and ive been meaning to ask this for some time... i heard somewhere that the std mani does not need to be port matched, that the ports are larger than the hf .... is this true????

i havent matched it up against the gasket yet....

line it up with your own gasket before you go porting it. take off too much and its junk
