how far from the engine?
I've been away from this board for a long time. Interesting to see all the familiar people.
How far could you locate a turbo and still have it produce decent boost with little lag? I have a friend who is planning to put a smallish turbo on his Nissan Pathfinder with the VG30e v6 engine. The problem he is facing is the lack of room in the engine compartment of the Pathfinder. He wants to locate the turbo where the cat is now, or even as far back as the muffler. The cat is about 4 feet from the middle exhaust ports of the engine, and the muffler is probably 6 feet away. He plans to run 7-8 pounds of boost. My first thought was that the turbo would lag so badly there wouldn't be much useful boost until at least the upper middle of the VG30e RPM range. I don't have experience with locating turbos far away from the engine compartment. I'm sure it could be done, I just want to see/hear about your experiences. |
Re: how far from the engine?
u can mount a turbo anywhere
the only problem ull have is the oiling system |
Re: how far from the engine?
Wouldn't you see extra lag by placing it so far back?

you need a smaller turbo when its that far away.

Find out what oil pump they use in those STS remote mount kits copy it for cheap.

Re: how far from the engine?
I would think you would see extra lag, but if you think about it tons of cars smoke right....well when they rev their engine the smoke only takes millisecconds to come out the exhaust at the back of the car, so maybe the pressure wouldnt take much longer to reach the turbo? I dont really know, but maybe it wouldnt be that bad?
