how do you index a turbocharger??
 

as the title describes...we got a basically new turbocharger from the pull-a-part today for my friend's soon to be turbo setup but it needs a bit of indexing first. I wanna make sure we don't goof or anything when doing it. Are there any write-ups anywhere on how to do this??

You can index/clock it however you want. Basically you want the center section of the turbo, so oil feed is on top, and the oil retun aims down towards the pan, so it gets a nice clean shot for the oil retun. The compressor housing can be mounted however you want, especially if you are running externally gated. Most of the time on internally gated setups the wastegate actuator has mounting holes on the Compressor housing, so rotating it around isnt going to happen unless you are going to modify things.

Another thing, sometimes turbo center sections/compressor housings have alignment dowls/pins that show the factory position. I normally grind them out ;)

ok, so both housing are easily rotateable?? the thing I'm worried about is that if I rotate them I'll get something off center and the turbine wheels will grind against the housing or something?? this won't happen? It's got an internal wastegate with the vacuum pot attached to the compressor housing but I'm just going to make a bent extension bracket that will wrap around the housing to where the pot will have to sit...kinds ghetto but who cares :P

thing I was worried about was that if I rotate the housings I would get something offcenter and not have the right shims or anything...could this possibly happen?

Im pretty sure that basically the only part that is rotatable is the compressor housing. The exhaust housing is going to have to bolt up to the exhaust manifold and most of the time that means facing upwards. The best thing to do is to get the turbo and set it exacly how it will be in the engine bay, then loosen the bolts that surrond the compressor housing and make adjustments if needed. A hammer may be of some use if it was pulled from a yard. good luck ;D

center section is clockable from the turbine side or turbine is clockable from the center section. depends on how you look at it. true the compressor is clockable as well.
