how to disect a turbo?

does anyone know of a page that shows you step by step how to take apart a turbocharger for cleaning.

ive got my teo4h, that ive taken off my dx motor and i wanna clean it up from all the carbon deposits in the exhaust housing side of it so its nice and clean for the zc.

i also wanna know how u can clean the exhaust side. like can i use my eletric tooth brush with some gas on it?

thats how i cleaned the compressor fins :D

the deposits on the exhaust parts almost seem grainy.

how the hell do you get rid of em.

i am going to glass bead the outside of the exhaust part in my booth. but can i just lighty touch up the fins or will the glass bead get into the bearing housings?

i just unbolted everything and used one of the bolts "unscrewed against the core" to pop the unit apart... using a replacement core really makes this easier. you can wire brush it with a dremmel to clean the housings.. e.t.c.

Taking the turbo apart really isnt to difficult, their are usually 4 bolts or a ring with a bolt holding the center section onto the exhaust housing. when you start taking these bolts out, sometimes the center section wont really want to come out. get a hammer and beat on the backside of the compressor, this will loosen it up a little bit. once you get the exhaust housing off, you can clean it with whatever you want. Now you can take the compressor off. This can be a bitch on some compressors, especially on Mitsu turbos that use a large snap ring. Others just use 13? or 12mm bolts and thats it. Then once that is off, you can clean all the crap up out of their. You can take the wheels off if you want, but damn sometimes they are a complete bitch, they are reverse thread and normally 12pt sockets.

can i take that little nut off and take the turbo fins off?

im worried about having to get it balanced.
or is that not a problem?

Re:how to disect a turbo?

there right, taking apart is easy as undoing bolts

as for cleaning the housing.. a media blaster with a fine shot sould be fine for the whole of the exhaust housing as it is cast iron, i'd refrain from painting it or anything though as the paint will just flake off with the heat

as for the compressor housing, these are usually cast aluminium, and under no circumstances should you shot blast them, especially the delicate inside face.. use emery cloth on the outside to make it pretty

hope this helps

i dont bead the inside of the cast alum housing i just do the outside with it off the turbo.
cant hurt it.

im just worried about bead getting in the seals when i beat the exhaust housing.

when you get the exhaust housing off, just clean it off real well before you attach the center section back on. You should have no problems..

I have only taken 1 T3 fully apart, and reassembled it. It seemed to work ok afterwards. I think when you start replacing bearings and seals it should be balanced, also, mark how everthing was taken off, and you shouldnt have a problem.
