Default How to check if a turbo is damaged?

I'm new here and did a quick search but didn't find what I was looking for.

I have a T3 turbo from a Thunderbird, it has a .60 compressor and .63 turbine. I know that the previous owner said the car squeeled under boost but wasnt completly sure it was the turbo.

How do I check the turbo for damage or shaft play whatever it needs. Also if it does have damage is it repairalbe or just better to get a different turbo. Any hep is appreciated

Spin the shaft with your fingers, then try to push it side to side. if there is resistance when you spin it or if the fins touch the sides of the housing it will need rebuilding. Carefully check the exhaust housing for cracks, inside and out, this is very common on Tbird turbos. If there are no cracks the turbo can be rebuilt. I rebuild these all the time. I can give you an oil and water cooled center section or just oil cooled, your choice. A complete rebuild with new bearings, seals, and balancing(very important for long turbo life)is $250.00. I can also replace a cracked housing as I have these in stock. My Email if you are interested is customcoach@comcast.net .

Thank you customcoach. I will look at the turbo when I go home this weekend. I had once called a turbo rebuild place and they said if it touches the housing or scratches it, then the whole housing had to be replaced.

I wont be doing this setup until this spring or early summer but if it needs rebuild I will keep your email on hand. Thank you very much for your help.
