Homemade Water Intercooler from a DSM SMIC?

I'm been thinking that a liquid intercooler would help me over my dsm SMIC. I have an extra DSM around here and was thinking that I could weld some sheet metal around the DSM and flow some water to it. I figure I would use my windshield fuild since its not hooked up, an old fuel pump, and some type of heat exchange from the bone yard. I might take it to a welder to have this done, I dont think my flux welder will do sheet metal.

What do yall think?

jeff did that with a Saab intercooler, I'm not sure of the results though, there is a write up in the FAQ.

i'm working on this for my MR2. i want to use 2 cores stacked and then weld a water jacket around them. it isn't the size of the core that determines how much/fast it will heat soak, it's the amount of water you run through it. the advantage of AWIC's is that you can vary the thermal mass of the system by using a larger water reservoir. run a 2 gallon res on that and it will take quite a while to heat soak. from what i've read, the dsm side mounts actually flow really well too. if you do this, i'd be interested to see some before and after temps. i like this idea though because it fits in the stock side mount location on the MR2 and dsm cores are a dime a dozen. i got mine for $30, now i just need one more..

go for it ive seen 7.sec mustangs use that setup use a fuel cell with no foam and a liquid pump and you can fill the cell with ice &water typical drag setup i want to do the same thing

Yeah, get one of the fuel cells from Summit and it should work descently... Just a note, the 8-gallon drag cell fits great in the spare tire well. You can fit a lot of ice in there... it'd be good for an endurance road race...

sounds interesting... Most of the import drag race guys use a liquid cooler (for the VERY fast cars, not street cars) but 8 gal is OVERKILL... 1 or 2 max, water is heavy
