homemade Flange material
well, I need a few honda D-series head flanges, and am having trouble sourcing them =/
I have contacted Cheapturbo.com, and they require a minimum order of 10, which I don't need that many (yet) So I figure a DIY-flange approach would be the way to go. Either way, I'm pretty new to this stuff, I just bought a MIG welder, to help me with my project(s) So the sky is the limit with what I can do. What material would be best to work with at home... 1/4" mild steel, or is that too thin? do I need 1/2"? is that something I could cut easily with either a Jigsaw, or a Sawzall and some Hole-Saws? Thanks for any help -Henry |
Re:homemade Flange material
1/2
i think pepole use bi-metal hole saws. that must take forever! |
Re:homemade Flange material
Yeah, that's what I'm sayin! it's gonna be a pain!
but I'll see what else I can find... maybe there's another company that can make me some! -Henry |
Re:homemade Flange material
i might be able to get one made for you. i am starting my manifold project.
im getting mine milled for free so ill see what he can do. mabey ill get like 5 or 10 done and see who needs em.. anyone interested? |
Re:homemade Flange material
I'll take a few, if the costs is resonable.
I would also go with 1/2 thick. Jeff |
Re:homemade Flange material
1/4" is a tad thin for a good flange.. look at cheapo headers compared to a good quality one's. The high end stuff allways uses at least 3/8 for flange material.. This is not so bad to drill with a bi metal holesaw. so long as you have a press and use alot of oil... machine work is a key as the ports are most likely not round and a transition needs to be hand machined with a die grinder.

Re:homemade Flange material

Re:homemade Flange material
Beats me, How wide? from each port? I dont know what size you are trying to determine?
I would go 1/2 thick and however long it needs to be. Just get a gasket as a templete to see the dimensions. Jeff |
Re:homemade Flange material
I got mine from geoff @ full-race.com for $60. Its 1/2" mild steel and looks perfect. Nothing like that pos the dropshop calls a head flange ;)

Re:homemade Flange material
If they turn out well, I'd be in for one as long as the price is reasonable.

Well that is a little more than I wanted to spend, but maybe he'll knock the price down a lil if I buy a few.. Thanks for the tip! -Henry |

Re:homemade Flange material
Dammit!
I want some D-series ones! Does anyone want to help out for a Group-Buy on D-series head flanges? Cheapturbo.com can make em, I just need to order 10 for them to write up a program for their CNC machine, after they do that, they'll have the program on file, and hopefully will be able to make them for whoever wants em after that... -Henry |
Re:homemade Flange material
Go start a group buy thingy in the classifieds, and find out how much it will cost. I am sure alot people would want D-Series Head Flanges, I want one.
