Default Is this Holset too big for a built D series? **PICS**

So I was going to turbo my 1998 GTP but that is VERY involved and I want to do it right on that car. I just got my tig welder etc. so I figure I may as well turbo my 91 hatch first, then turbo the GTP. (I have turboed 4 cars already before, but all more sorta ghetto flux core welding, hacksaw cutting type stuff. now I have all the right tools, just have to practise with them)

Anyways, the hoslet that I have is not a hx35, from the markings it's a H1c but it definetly is not a normal one because as you can see from the pics below, it really isn't that big.

the compressor housing is the same size as on a T3/T4, the turbine housing is pretty huge though.

Motor is a SOHC ZC, would put in tuner toys rods, vitara pistons, arp studs all new bearings etc. and would probably boost ~15-20 psi since the compression would be pretty darn low.

Car would be setup more for drag, so top end power is good, above 4000rpm. If it has 20psi from 5000-5500rpm to 7500rpm then I would be happy with that.

thoughts?

the GTP is already supercharged, why not just screw with the SC setup?

Not that I want to go off topic....you just get better gains for MUCH less money going with turbo. you have to shell out well over 5G to get 350-400whp with the blower. Or spend 2G's and turbo it and get the same power.

Anyone think this turbo is too big? Compressor should be ok, turbine size though is a little scary. I guess since it used T3 inlet, standard oil fittings and Vband downpipe, I can't go wrong with just trying it out at least. If it's too big I'll sell it and buy a smaller T3/T4...right?

Looks comparible to my IHI RHC6 GM3 from the 6.5 GMC turbo diesel's. The turbine is quite larger than my 70 trim .60/.63 A/R Garrett. I simply found a .48 A/R Garrett exhaust housing and had the GM3 stuffed inside. It cured the lag problem, somewhat.

I'm doing the exact same thing.

Let us know how it runs Jays91.

You guys are putting a Garrett housing on the GM diesel turbo?

I'm going to check that out but from my initial investigation it doesn't like like I can do that to this turbo since the housing won't bolt on, different bolt pattern on the turbine housing and the center section.

there might be quite a bit of lag on the sohc zc. even if its built haha that ---- is huge. but for drag racing i guess you wouldnt have a problem with traction being that it probably wont spool in first. but i dont know jack ---- about them turbo's

I should have been more specific. I'm going to attempt to swap the center section from a chevy diesel turbo onto my little T3. I looked at the bolt patterns side y side and they look to be the same...but I guess I'll see.

Just so you know, you'll likely have to send the T3 exhaust housing to be machined to fit the turbine wheel in the IHI turbo. Even if the bolt centers line up, it's unlikely that the IHI turbine wheel is the exact same dimensions as a Garrett "Stage 1" wheel, which your .48 housing is likely to be machined for.

If the IHI wheel is smaller (unlikely), it'll fit, but you'll have worse spoolup than before - if it's bigger, it physically won't fit without machining the housing.

I was just planning on swapping the compressor wheels.
