Holset choice

So I'm looking at two Holsets I can buy, both H1D. They both have the same turbine wheel.

One has a 65 mm exd / 37mm ind. compressor wheel; exhaust housing critical area (whatever that is) 6 cm
The other has 65/41 mm compressor wheel, exhaust housing critical area 8 cm

I'm tempted to buy the one with the smaller housing, however about its smaller inducer—what does it mean in terms of power or spool?

thanks for any help.

600hp turbo

hmm doubt that, not with those small inducers. I'm just wondering about the power potential of smaller one, I like it—should have a quick spool.

C D E
C = quick spool, depending on exh will make good power
E = 500+whp with luck
I guess D leaves you with the best of both worlds? never seen one yet. pics nigra.

Also, both inducers sound SMALL get the bigger one.

Re: Holset choice

If that is the true size even the big one is smaller than a 14b. A 14b is ~43mm inducer / ~58mm exducer.

Way too small to hassle with IMO. I couldn't say for sure especially without the turbine wheel size but it should spool slower than a 14b too given the larger 8cm turbine housing of the bigger turbo.

Yeah both seem too small.

These pics are all I have

slightly smaller H1D:

You're too far... I'm in Europe ;)

Gay! International Priority wouldn't be too bad. Maybe $100. Still worth it maybe? Cheaper if you want to wait 3 weeks, but then it has to go through a bunch of sorting facilities which raises the chance of it getting damaged during transport. That's why fast shipping is a good choice; international or not. IDK how available the HX35w is in Europe.

its such a common turbo surely he can find one somewhere. Especially with the way diesels are so popular over there. H1C's are even more common than HX35's around here.

Should work, I would go with the bigger exhaust, I have no idea what would use a 6cm housing!

The smaller hx35 uses a 12 or 9cm exhaust housing.

The H1D auction fell through >:(; I was gonna buy one anyway because they were so damn cheap (50 pounds).

Anyway—found and bought a WH1E ;) but I will need a smaller exhaust (it's a twin scroll 18cm).

Anybody want to sell me a 12cm housing out there? Or a 9cm too. Will need to be shipped to Italy, USPS preferred.

A 12cm housing won't fit without modification. The 12cm fits the smaller H1c or HX35 turbine wheel. The H1E and Hx40 usually use the same turbine wheel. You can get the BEP housing, which is pretty small but if you are willing to run high boost can still make a lot of power.
Otherwise I think a 16cm housing is the smallest size stock holset housing I've seen that will fit that turbine wheel without modification.

Ah well, there I have it. I guess I can always block off one hole.

I'm on good terms with a good machine shop so I could have one machined to fit the H1E wheel. I wonder if it would become too thin and crack though.

It can be done. A friend had a 12cm machined out to fit an HX40.
