Holden VE ute
 
hi, i am thinking of getting a new holden VE ute

what are your thoughts on turboing this?

can you suggest possible turbos intercooler etc that i could use, and how easy will it be considering its a SIDI engine i have looked around and it seems as no one is really doing this

The hardest part is goin to be upgrading you injectors for flow more fuel. Since it is SIDI its goin to be hard to find bigger injectors. There are some turbo cars out there running SIDI like the Soltice and Sky. Also the Caddy v6 as well as the new Camaro is SIDI but they are not turbo.

Since the SIDI is such high fuel pressure upto 2200psi its not goin to be like slap a AFPR on it and raise the fuel pressure.

You might be able to get some aftermarket injectors for a Sky or Soltice since a lot of guys like to build them. I dont know that there are some but there may be. They do have a good amount of aftermarket support. Also you might be able to get a stock set from a Sky or Soltice turbo and use those. I dont know how they are designed or if they will fit correctly or not.

Also the ECM controls fuel pressure my voltage to the high side pressure pump. The higher the voltage the more the volume of the pump. You might be able to control the ECM and change the voltage to the pump to gain more fuel.

As far as the rest of the turbo stuff it would be just like turbo'ing anything else. Build a mani and search for parts. I say build a mani cause there prob is not one on the market for that yet.

Some Honda aftermarket turbo systems use a set of secondary injectors once boost is read. That might be a thought too. Have some bungs welded into the intake mani and Tee into the low pressure side of the fuel system. It is ~60psi on that side.

where do you buy your turbos from? im pretty new to this stuff

i was thinking of GT 35/40 or a HX-40, but i have no idea of prices what do you guys think?

With stock internals and the higher compression that they run on those(well with SIDI in general) I would run more than 8-10psi. With that low of boost you wont need a turbo that size. Somethin like a .42/.48 or .60/.48 Garrett T3.

I am unsure of how the internals of that engine are built. I am guessing at the boost you can run. Could be more or less. Either of the turbos mentioned above will spool quickly and make decent power. You could also look into a stock turbo from a Mitsubishi Eclipse turbo. You can usually find any of these used at a salvage yard or you can buy them new. Usually you can get a good shape one from the salvage yard cheap and just put new seals and bearings in it fairly cheap. Usually about 1/4 of the price of a new one.

so if i want to run higher boost say 12 to 15 psi, what internals would i need to change?

so what boost should the turbos i mentioned be run at?

Prob pistons and rods.

The HX40 and sim are really designed to be ran 20 to 25 or even more. My buddys stock dodge runs 35 to 40 psi. Thats the apps the Holsets are designed for. I am goin to be pushing my luck to run 15 to 18 on my H1c. It will how ever seem some time at 25 to 30 psi though.

I am not sure about the GT 35/40 but I am guessing around the same as the Holset.

If you try to run them at low boost on smaller displacement cars you are risking compressor surge.

im pretty sure the GT 35/40 is the samt turbo out of the xr6, so running it at 8-10 psi should be fine, although i could be wrong

i really cant find anywhere to buy either of these turbos though, i just want to check out the prices on each

Oh ok I know which one you are talking about. I was thinking of a diff one. My buddy just put a gt35 on a Hybusa and it is doin great so it would prob work fine on there.

sweet any ideas on how much it will all cost?

am I right in saying all I really need is a turbo, intercooler oil lines piping etc and a boost controller? Plus a tune and upgrade stuff like fuel pump, injectors probably pistons and rods to?

7. Water lines(if water cooled)
8. Vacuum lines
9. Blow off valve & mount
10. Intercooler
11. Intercooler piping
12. IC pipe connectors
13. T bar clams
14. Wastegate (if ext gated turbo)
15. Boost controller
16. Boost gauge
17. Wideband o2
18. Map sensor or missing link
19. AFC or tuning software/hardware
20. Oil pressure gauge
21. Turbo timer(not required)
22. Zip ties, screws, clamps, etc mounting hardware

If goin with a high boost app will will need more like but not limited to the following.

1. Forged pistons w/rings
2. Forged rods
3. ARP head studs
4. Headgasket
5. Complete gasket set

Its cool man. Its almost there waiting on base map and driver side cv axle.

also i have been wondering whats the need for a fuel pump?

is it because with larger injectors you need more pressure the keep the right amount of flow?

its not you need more pressure it cause you need more volume once your inj get so big.
