HMT a miata?
anyone have any experience with turboing a 1.6L dohc 90' miata? like how well do these engines hold up to boost and is there any issues with boosting them
might be fun i was thinking, rwd + cant way more then a old hatch might end up with one in a trade |

Re: HMT a miata?
f' it i did my research. bsaicly im gona wreck it if i get it, sounds like the back end will rip apart, replace with a rx7 one, then the engine will rip apart at 250hp. sweet. rwd at least
i searched and always the 2nd reply was " homo car fallowed by handle awesome and fun as hell |
Re: HMT a miata?
The 1.6L blocks are strong as piss. Boost it - without a doubt. I plan on getting a miata and boosting it in the next year or so.

^just for reference I want one too, I dont care if its a 'chiks' car, they are so much fun to drive. |
Re: HMT a miata?
I saw one with some jdm fender flares and a hard top all black, looked like a race car, changed my mind a bit about the homoness.

Re: HMT a miata?
A turbo should wake that car up nice. Go for it.

Re: HMT a miata?
I'd do it. It should be a fun car. Who cares if its a girls car. Most people consider civic's girl cars.

Re: HMT a miata?
Working for a mazda dealership now an i would like to do a turbo install on one of these lil cars. The twin cam engine is a good starter for boost. I bet it could handle 10 psi no problem. Fuel control an ignition control would be easy. If you had a buddy who could rewire it to a honda ecu then infinite tunning. The ecus are not programable from wheat i have read an seen . Had a guy come in here the other day with an older miata an it had a fuel injected 302 with the t5 ford trans. Was a sweet setup an it cleared the hood. Definite sleeper

Re: HMT a miata?
use it anyway, i hear they make honda manifolds worse cuz they dont care for em? haven't seen to many problems with the manifolds on other kinda cars. wouldn't hurt to try it... either way the miata motor loves boost.

Re: HMT a miata?
yea the only manifold that cracks AFAIk are civic and eclipse :8
anything else hold up just fine |

Re: HMT a miata?
ya thats what i figured, they probly sell %80 honda manifolds which is why theres more storys about those ones cracking
|
Re: HMT a miata?
That mazda speed factory turbo set up is interesting. I wonder if they did anything to the motor there-low compression forged etc. The amount of power the turbo adds is amazingly low tho. A DIY setup would rock.

Re: HMT a miata?
Go to miataturbo.net - lots of DIY turbos there. :y
Both the 1.6 and 1.8 are good to go mechanically as-is for boost. Lots of parts available for HMT Miata build up :y Weak spots- * 1.6 rear goes first- but easy to upgrade to the 1.8 rear using the half shafts and drive shaft- bolts in. * Next to go is the 5 speed transmission- 6 speed is much stronger and easy bolt-in * Simple swap to 1.8 also- extra 200cc with same strength- bolt up 99-00 cylinder head to 1.8 for more flow I have an SSA header for a 1.8 that's been modified to fit a Mazda 2.0 FE. I've got it braced in two places to relieve stress on the welds at the flange- plus a flex pipe. I believe the cracking is due to the orientation of the header for fwd. When a transverse motor rocks it focuses all the stress of the exhaust on those welds at the flange. And that's the weak point of the cheap headers. The big problems with the SSA Miata headers are flange flatness and misalignment of bolts holes. |
Re: HMT a miata?
Ive heard that there is a small block ford convesion that only cost about 225 for all the mounts. Then all you need is the motor and trans, and a rearend out of a Bronco II, or a ford ranger they hold quite a bit of power before they break. Then you do a twin turbo setup, and rip ass!!!! btw it adds about 125 lbs to the frond end so ive been told. I think that would be alot of fun.

Re: HMT a miata?
Dropping in a V8 is more work and money than that. And the stock 5.0 is going to make similar power to a turbo 1.6 and less than a turbo 1.8. IF I did the V8 it would be a LSx like this. All HMT style- superb work. Over 400hp/ftlbs - out runs a Honda CBR600 from the dig.

Re: HMT a miata?
damn were the ---- are the manifolds on that car i would hate to have that it would be a bitch to work on :S
|
Re: HMT a miata?
Looks like there's lots of room between the chassis and header flange. Pushrods make for a small v8. :y

Re: HMT a miata?
I hate to say it but there is no replacement for displacement! Just ask you girlfriend! I can go buy a complete 5.0 motor and trans for $500 from the wrecking yard down the street from me. A rearend and driveline for $125. I then pick up 2 turbos from turbo cougar, from the same yard for $50 for bolth. dsm 450's for $1 each. A fmu from ebay for $25. A intercooler from ebay for $65. And all the mounts do do this for about $225. And mabey some mis. parts pipes ect. for $200 on the hi side. So for about $1200 you can have a turbo V8 miata. Tell me that wouldnt be bad ass!!!! It may not be the chepest thing to do but it sure would be a blast. Just ask johnny what its like to have a twin turbo 5.0. I took video of his car doing rippers up and down the street and it sounded bad ass!!!!

where do you live junkyard land right outside hickton?

Re: HMT a miata?
a 200rwhp 1gen miata will run 12's Miata's being really light don't need v8 tq to go fast hp will do the job fine. There was a guy who dropped a 450whp 5.0 into a miata in kent. The first time on 10" slicks and twisted the frame and shattered the windshield his first pass at pacific raceways. He also said it runed the car, it was nolonger fun to drive the pushed like a civic through turns unless you over gassed it and just spunout. flyinmiata is the ----!

Re: HMT a miata?

Re: HMT a miata?
I live about 15 miles north of Bremerton Wa. The ------- hillbilly hick ---- that owns the wrecking yard Could care less about his ---- that he has. You can work a deal like a mofo. Show up with a 12 pack of bush light and $20 and he will give you just about anything you want. God I love white trash people!!! Not a care in the world. Anyways boost it, ---- it if it blows up. HMT FOR LIFE!!!!!!

Re: HMT a miata?
The miata motor is the same as the 323 86-89. They come with oil squirters, the only difference is they used a lighter rod. I just crashed my buddies 92 car into a curb about 4 weeks ago. They are like driving a bigger gokart. Good gear ratios in the tranny.
Good luck |
Re: HMT a miata?
Don't turbo a 90 get a 92-93 for a 1.6 or better yet a 94 up conversion.
Reason: 90's have a short nose crank which is prone to snap, A crappy 6"in non lsd diff, and turque less engine. Best bet: 1.1.6L(92-93) 1.8L(94-2000) 2. GT-R forged rods $550 (corkspeed) 3. Wiseco pistons (summit racing) 4. DIY turbo mani and DP (Dont buy ebay ---- it will crack) 5. Emanage blue w/ autotune and O2 clamp 6. Custom exhaust Check out miata.net for more info in the garage section. |

Re: HMT a miata?
over priced (although they make good #'s) but for the price of an FM II kit and a built engine you could do a rotary or V8 swap.

Re: HMT a miata?
yea man miataturbo.net has you set. currently i own two 1st gen miatas and i wont get another car again. the 1.6 has forged rods and pistons from the factory and can handle a fuel managment unit making 200 whp for over 8 years with a programable ecu i am sure you could make 250 and never have ---- go on you. currently i have a manifold and downpipe for the 1.6 miata for sale i made. its fully stainless to the head flange and all and fully stainless 3" downpipe if your interested. its on the miata.net classifieds under the forced induction section. manifold/downpipe. deffinetly turbo it. the miata is perfect in everyway imo except for power, thats really all they need, oh and a lsd. let me know my name on miataturbo.net is mxv and oh miata.net it is o0Quicksilver0o. ---- anyone who has somthing against miata's, have fun finding a better platform to do anything with and esspecially for the money.
