Default Help welding exhaust

I've got a cheapy flow through mufler, and a cherry bomb and some of that flexible exhaust piping, a 8 ft. piece of tube and some hangers. There's a welding program at my school and the students can use the equipment whenever, so I'm going to drop by this weekend and see if I can get this stuff done.

Do I have to use a tig welder or will a mig work? I have almost no welding experience and I heard tig welding takes a while to learn, I figure with a little practice before hand I can handle a mig, just wondering if this exhaust has to be tigged.

MIG.

if your doing the welding do a little practice before u hit the pipe, make sure u got the right feed speed and amperage or u will blow a hole.

good luck

Well if you have the time and the tools at your disposal, I would TIG weld it for the ---- of it.. it's a lot more expensive to use but then you know that your welds look really pretty underneath.

Every exhaust shop I've ever been to uses MIG, solid core wire with argon/co2 shielding gas. You might want to get someone else to show you the ins and outs before you begin, I can foresee you birdnesting the ---- up on your first pipe. Don't forget to wipe down all the areas that are going to get welded with sandpaper to remove any coatings.

I have a good amount of exhaust work to do here and there, but my problem is I'm dealing with rusted pipes, and I nearly want to sandblast all the ---- first.

Good Luck

man, living in a big city rocks... I was all pissed off and sitting in advanced autoparets when this 72' 240z rolls up, fully built and the guy says it runs with z06's at the track. So I ask him if he knows anybody that can weld? He can, gave me his number and he's gonna hook me up on the welding tomorrow, I'm gonna get him a 12 pack, I'm guessing budweiser, maybe heinekin.

maybe ask that guy to show you a thing or 2 so you actually gain some knowledge from the whole experience. I bird's nested the ---- out of my first welding project, my craftsmen welder came all set up for the smaller type of wire that it came with except for the feed wheel so it slipped and the wire feed pulsed and there was no such thing as a bead happening on my pipes.

cause it costs MONEY to enroll in the classes; it's like a mix between college and a tech school and welding has nothing to do with my major.

apparently the guy works at a golf course or something from talking to him; he couldn't get to it today because some girl flipped a golf cart and he has to fix it, but his buddy has a wideband and a full garage including lift... I get to hang out with them this weekend, I'm thinking a case of budweiser...

I hope you have a MIG welder to do stainless. First you will need a 100% argon charged cylinder for shielding gas. Stainless takes a little bit more juice to do the same size as mild. Wire speed you will figure out once you get into it.
