HELP!!! PLEASE!!!

This is a 2nd gen prelude with an A20A3 SOHC 12 valve engine.Ok well i installed my turbo and piping. I have basically no issues with the fitment. BUT I can't get the car to run well at all... I barelly got it to idle. My boost/vaccum gauge reads the same as when i was N/A(17 vaccum at idle). But when i rev the engine i get nothing but what sounds like backfiring, it will not rev up smoothly. It is just bouncy. i tried to mess with the ignition timing by moving the distributor and rev it up but nothing seemed to help. Another thing, i filled up the tank this morning and now i noticed that there is like an 8th to maybe a 1/16th gone... enough to where i can tell there is less anyway. My whole setup consists of....

-SAFC 2
-wideband air/fuel ratio gauge(aem uego)
-autometer boost/vaccum gauge
-dsm 450 injectors(cleaned and balanced)
-dsm blowoff valve(stock)
-MSD 255lph fuel pump
-adjustable fuel pressure reg(fuel psi is currently at 32)
-fuel pressure gauge(thats how i know above)
-teo4 turbo
-elijahs old old manifold.
-msd 6al box
-msd blaster 2 coil
-ngk plugs/wires

What could be my problem...the sucky thing for me is that i only have one car to drive, so i planned on getting this done in one or two days... It's going on three and still no car. HELP ME OUT HERE!!!!

Re: HELP!!! PLEASE!!!

What are your SAFC fuel settings at? Are they calibrated for your 450s?

Injector seals ok?

Firing order correct?

Re: HELP!!! PLEASE!!!

Oh yeah i checked my firing order first, then second i checked compression again... And the only way i could get it to run is to put the SAFC down to -50% on Lo throtle at 1000 RPM at a throttle point of 0%.... does that make sense... And to answer your question NO. I didn't calibrate it at all... Can you help me to do this ??????

Re: HELP!!! PLEASE!!!

A20A3 are stout as piss, but I feel bad for you thinking you can DIY a turbo Honduh with no backup transportation.

Set the AFC to -40 across the board lo throttle, and richen it up (-38 to -35 or so) in the higher rpms on the hi throttle. Your ECU is tuned for ~240cc and you have 450cc so you have to draw out a lot of fuel.

Good luck getting it to like boost... the vacuum advanced distributor WILL need to be kicked, but might let you run the AFC hack with good results if you can tweak it to retard under boost - I don't know if you can, YOU need to check that out.

Re: HELP!!! PLEASE!!!

Oh duh i forgot about that.. Would you recomend disconnecting that? I can just disconnect that and get a BTM right?

HMTguy 01-16-2007 10:16 PM

Re: HELP!!! PLEASE!!!

No.

You still need to advance your timing as you rev higher regardless.

And retard accordingly with boost.

Re: HELP!!! PLEASE!!!

I just talked to someone that tunes for a living and he said to try turning down the fuel pressure because the backfiring could be caused by way too much fuel. Also he told me to turn down the SAFC to like 45% to 50% across to like 3000 rpm and then integrat to 0 from there gradually.

HMTguy 01-16-2007 10:40 PM

Re: HELP!!! PLEASE!!!

if your fuel pressure is at stock spec, don't ---- with it at this point.

Tom-Guy 01-16-2007 10:41 PM

Re: HELP!!! PLEASE!!!

BTM won't help you if the boost fucks with a vacuum dashpot. BTM won't help you if you disconnect something vital when trying to bypass the vacuum system. Your only recourse is to learn how the ----------er works, and nobody is going to do that for you on a stone age vehicle.

The someone who tunes for a living is an idiot. At no point will you be able to run 0 adjustment on an AFC hacked vehicle without flooding the engine with gas or disabling your ability to read boost via MAP sensor and have the ECU respond. Give me this person's number and I will give them detailed technical information why this is, and they will fist themselves out of shame.

Re: HELP!!! PLEASE!!!

Got it running, -50% to -45% at low throttle all the way to 3600 rpm gradually going to 0 by 4500 rpm. Set at -42% to -38% on high throttle all the way to 3600 rpm " " " " ... So it runs great, i got a full 2 1/2 inch exhaust done today and it runs at 13.5 air/fuel on the freeway at 3000 rpm.Oh and its running at 5 lbs of boost and there is no check engine light.

Because the AFC makes your MAP sensor think that it's not seeing boost, that's no great accomplishment.

Re: HELP!!! PLEASE!!!

Maybe a check valve/bleeder valve at the dizzy since it's vaccum advance. Have it so it still pulls vacuum while out of boost, and then when it sees boost it'll bleed off and set the dizzy to tdc. Won't pull as hard under boost, but would probably allow you to turn it up a few psi more without having to worry about detonation. ;D

Re: HELP!!! PLEASE!!!

Can anyone give me any ideas on how to set the decel - air flow on the SAFC. Because i was deceling from like 3000 rpm and it back fired from going lean(not good). I tried it on my own but the car just dies after decel around 1000 rpm. Thanks.. I'll post a link to the pics soon.

Re: HELP!!! PLEASE!!!

u've got yourself lots of goodies out there but doesnt seems to be able fully utilise it. should your wideband AFR gauge was hook up correctly and working fine, u shld be able to safe tune it.

the issue you're having here is not able to proper manage your feul setting. hacing backfire decelling more likely to having too rich setup. have you check your injector impedance correctly? nevertheless, SAFC 2 only having 12 map point which is not much. Grab an emanage if you can

that's a hell of an attitude for a moderator to have....I've been coming to this site since'02 or '03 and this is the first time I've ever seen anyone on here boost one of those cars...just because you're an "EXPERT" and have no problem with this stuff, doesn't mean you have to down him when he's proud of having figured something out....oh yeah, and if you wanna ban me, feel free, this site has pretty much gone 2 $hit anyways...

He hasn't figured anything out. His ignition is entirely uncontrolled, and he has no idea what it is doing.

Sounds like it could be doing worse...

Re: HELP!!! PLEASE!!!

13.5:1 AFRs at 3000 rpm, but at what load? Erroneous information, useless in every way. 5 psi of boost, but what is the ignition timing? Again, erroneous. Sounds like you know less than this guy if you really think the car in question is running great.

I *told* him what his issues were, if he chooses not to search on the subject it is not my fault. He thinks backfiring as he lets off of the throttle is a problem, when it's tip-in fuel cut due to MAP input disortion, which he'd know if he read the first FAQ on the AFC hack. But, he hasn't - and neither have you since you think this thread is so peachy and everyone telling him he has issues is a dick. The simple fact of the matter is that he is incapable of hearing, and while you hear criticism your mind goes blank at the first technical term and instead of asking what those unfamiliar technical terms mean you interpret things as unwarranted mistreatment by hardcase unhelpful flamers.

This site used to be great because people possessed the DIY spirit with the entirety of their being, who followed leads and tips on their own initiative, could use Google about as well as my 10 year old daughter, and were not afraid to ask for clarification via PM... now we have a bunch of miserable half-talents who read HMT in an issue of Stupid Street and expect to come here and be spoonfed information which they have no intention of perusing, learning, or applying.

If you are too goddamn stupid to understand the contents of this forum then I suggest you buy a stock car and go back to playing console video games. We are not here to give you a warm feeling inside, we are here to tell you the goddamn straight line truth. So far neither you nor the original poster has had dick to say in referrence to anything technical I've posted, but you want to whiny whiny to someone who's contributed more to this site in his first sub-100 posts than you ever will if you stick around to post 1000.

Fist yourself, bitch, you are no one and possess no knowledge and are offering nothing to address any of the technical aspects at hand in this thread. BUT you can sure get pissy on the interwebs when you don't approve of content you've done nothing to enhance. Holy ----, we are impressed by you. ::)

Re: HELP!!! PLEASE!!!

Well Joseph Davis thanks for your help on post #3 that helped me greatly, i got the car to run that's the first step. And as for not listening to anything anyone here has to say and not learning from it that's not true. I tried to search by ofcourse clicking on the search button at the top of the page in the forum section and it doesn't work for me.. Don't know why but i'm not a computer guy so... yeah... And as for getting anymore tuning parts, i have done this project relatively cheaply, in the HMT fasion and just want your help on a good an effective street tune with what i have nothing more.. There wasn't always obd1 conversions and aem ems's if you know what i mean. It is just hard to know what every technical word means you know so you have to go easy on me. I'm here to gain knowledge from those who know there stuff and that is what brought me here in the first place. So as for this thread, i consider it dead, i'll request your help again when i need it ok.. Thanks.

Re: HELP!!! PLEASE!!!

Sorry, I like you for what you've accomplished so far, and as stated previously I like your choice in car. I'm just a little irked with the asshat.

The HMT search engine goes up and down like a priest's penis between choir practices. What you need to so is go to Google and type in your search terms followed by "site:www.homemadeturbo.com" and you'll get back results from HMT only.

Have fun... and read your plugs (NGKs, no platinum or iridium crap) as that's a decent cheap way of making sure you aren't detonating. Some Honda engines are indifferent to ignition timing (LS, for example, can even have timing advanced) up to the ~ 6 psi range. Make sure you have the distributor retard figured out before you take it to that level... and you can very probably get boost pressure to do your retard for you if you are crafty.
