HELP: Need ideas on turboin' a Sentra SpecV

Alright you turbo gurus. Got a question for ya..

I'm helping my friedn turboing his Sentra Spec V. However, I dunno what kind of fuel management I can use on his car? I'm thinking MF2 (since I already have the unit laying around and I love it). However, for the time being..you think I should go w/ FMU and run like 5psi till we upgrade the fuel management?

Also, where can I get all accesseries like oil return line, oil feed line (stainless) and silicone hose..etc? All help are welcome!

Thanks in advance

Hey where are you located? I've been wanting to get my hands on one of those cars to build a manifold and some other parts.. I'm in PA.. Check www.turbopiping for the parts you need.

i'm in central, nj. but my friend lives in MA. I found out that the stock header can be made into a manifold (just cut the cat off and it looks very do-able).

Re:HELP: Need ideas on turboin' a Sentra SpecV

That should work fine. Those motors seem like they have alot of potential.. only 9.5 compression and 180hp stock. Plus its a freegin 2.5L It should put down some impressive numbers.

Re:HELP: Need ideas on turboin' a Sentra SpecV

Yup. I'm thinking t3/t4 turbo and run prolly like 5psi until we can figure out the best engine management. fmu is the way to go for now (I guess?)

Well.. I have always liked the extra injector controlers better. I don't know much about the nissans though so there might be some sort of a chip or something you can get for it. Worst case you could just go with the sds system.. That motor should be able to handle 10psi easy and put down 300+whp..

that's what i'm thinking too. MF2 is a greate device if you're not boosting like crazy

I know this post is old, but if you're still thinking about this, the FMU won't work because the Sentras use a returnless fuel system.

also jeff says those engines are peices of ----. rods are smaller than d series honda engines. something about rod bearing problems, on completely STOCK engines, kids go out and rev em to redline and they spin bearings. if i remember right

Jared 08-26-2003 09:02 AM

Re:HELP: Need ideas on turboin' a Sentra SpecV

The rod bearing problem has been fixed, every engine from july 02 up uses countermeasure bearings. But with the small rods, open deck, and horrible r/s ratio, I'd rather build an SR20.

Re:HELP: Need ideas on turboin' a Sentra SpecV

when that car was first released SCC did a huge tech article on that engine, it is definitely not suited for forced induction, you'd be better off selling that car and getting a 2.0L.

That is such a high tech piece it'll cost you an arm and a leg to replace should you damage anything.

Or you could make friends with someone at a Nissan dealership, we've been throwing engines in them right and left because of the damn convertors.

LOL, that new recall is shitty... the basic heat shield install is a piece of cake. and most of the techs in our shop say the convertor is "a-ok" lol... I'm the unlucky bastard that has to do one tommorow. Oh well, atleast they come in longblock form. I had to do a few shortblock QR25's on Altimas, what a pain in the ass.

As you already know, Nissan warranty blows ass.

Re:HELP: Need ideas on turboin' a Sentra SpecV

Yeah, Nissan warranty does blow. I've done 6 of those bastards in the last 4 months. 4 long and 2 short. The short blocks suck hard. Funny story, the last one I did, I did the recall on it 2 weeks earlier and it came back with a convertor efficiency code and smoking. Called fix and they said the upper part of the convertor must have already been gone when I did the recall, since the recall offers no way to check that, I asked, he said they were looking into it. What a joke.

Re:HELP: Need ideas on turboin' a Sentra SpecV

Well, I did my first Qr25 long block in a sentra.. pretty cake job.. Just sucks when the other guys are gravey'n down on brake jobs and services, oh its all apart of the game, take some shitty jobs, get some good ones. ya know how your "suppose" to damage the old engine when it comes out so it can be destroyed? lol.. well Nissan isnt calling them back, So I loaded 2 of them up in my van. 1 good running qr25 and one burning oil. Wonder what I can do with those? coughebaycough ;)

Me too, they didn't call back ----, so between me and a buddy of mine, we have 6. Can you say core rebuild program? haha.

HMT-Admin 09-07-2003 06:06 PM

Re:HELP: Need ideas on turboin' a Sentra SpecV

damn 6 of those, haha.. Nice Jared, I scored a 350z 6speed tranny awhile back, customer said it had a "intermit" scratch into second. I think the worst warranty job I've had to do was a VQ35 shortblock in a 02 Altima. Dear god, what a ------- pain in the ass, all caused by a little screw that was left loose on the secondary runner (butterfly) in the intake manifold. Got sucked down the engine!

Have you guys got the prototype Titan truck at your dealership yet?

Jeff

Jared 09-07-2003 07:12 PM

Re:HELP: Need ideas on turboin' a Sentra SpecV

Ooh, that blows, so far I'm the only one that's had to replace a VQ engine at my dealership, and that was an 02 pathfinder, but I got to do it long, insurance job. Paid around 22 hrs and took me a day, nice stuff. Anyway, we haven't gotten a titan yet, hopefully soon. Everyone at Nissan tells me that V8 looks like a VQ35 with two more cylinders. Speaking of crap warranty on new vehicles, I got to do a steering rack on an 04 quest last month.

HMT-Admin 09-07-2003 07:25 PM

Re:HELP: Need ideas on turboin' a Sentra SpecV

Sounds like your just like me, young and get all the shitty jobs? heh, while the old farts are doing all the easy ----. haha a rack on a 04 quest, I havent even had the privilage to touch one yet ::) How are you guys doing as far as work goes? staying busy? We are really slow at times, then really busy, up and down.. I had an unsteady paycheck :-\

btw, you drive one of the new Spec V's with the Brembo brake kit? man I was doing a test drive with one on a PDI, and I had no idea it had the big brake kit, Man, they sure stop nice!

Jared 09-07-2003 08:23 PM

Re:HELP: Need ideas on turboin' a Sentra SpecV

Sounds like me, despite having my ASE Master, Nissan electrical specialist, and being pretty good at what I do, I get no respect from some of the older guys just because I'm young. Up and down exactly describes our shop lately, except for warranty crap and ---- jobs which seem to keep rolling in lately. All the new stuff sucks, especially since they started building it in tennessee. Yeah, the brembos are nice, but damn, 4k added to the sticker for them, that's rediculous. BTW, I may have my hands on a 6speed LSD sentra trans here soon if Nissan doesn't call it back. It doesn't have 6th gear, but shouldn't be hard to fix once parts are available.

Re:HELP: Need ideas on turboin' a Sentra SpecV

wtf...it went form me asking that turbo question to you guys talking about the dealers :P

how 'bout chrysler dealers? anybody are chrysler mechanic here? :) Warranty jobs sucks in any dealer guys :)

as for the project..i found out about the rod/stroke ratio and I was like..hell no i ain't gonna touch that ---- :)

I agree, from what I've seen, repaired, built, etc.. If I were to build a Nissan it would be a 200SX with an SR20. I don't care much for the QR25 engine, but I do have a good use for an SE-R body. I've been looking at the engine cradles, etc.. and look at this, the sentra comes with the QR25 engine, the altima comes with the QR25 and the VQ35 with no modifications to the mounts that actually weld in the car, so wouldn't a VQ35DE from a Maxima or Altima fit in an SE-R sentra body? I wonder if the back head would clear the strut tower.....

Re:HELP: Need ideas on turboin' a Sentra SpecV

Jesus jared, we even think alike... lmao.. I had 2 on the rack when the SER came out.. VQ35 SER Twin turbo, got torque steer?

Re:HELP: Need ideas on turboin' a Sentra SpecV

damn..i should've went to niisan school instead of chrysler :( I get to play with NEON's and CARAVAN's if that counts :P

Oh yeah..you wanna see some recalls. Try having cars that suppose to have 3.8L engine and some dufus think its funny to put in 3.2L Don't even know how that got out of the factory and all the inspectors :)

DOMESTIC QUALITIES YO' :)

Re:HELP: Need ideas on turboin' a Sentra SpecV

Also, do you know if any other coutry gets a 4wd version of the sentra? I've noticed the front lower dust shields in the Sentras are labeled 2WD, no other model is like that.

Re:HELP: Need ideas on turboin' a Sentra SpecV

The only Qr25 equipped 4wd car is this thing, as far as I know.. Nissans xtrail, offered in Europe.. Maybe they have a 4wd Renault equipped Qr25?

I'd seen pics of that last time I went to school, but didn't know it had a QR25 in it, I wonder if it got the recall too....

Re:HELP: Need ideas on turboin' a Sentra SpecV

I havent takin my spec v in for the recall yet. What should i do to get a new engine....hahahah.........I guess when i take it in for the recall i will get either my 3rd gear replaced or new tranny since my 3rd gear grinds when i shift into it at 5000 or above not below though ??? I already had nissan check it out and they said they would fix it under warranty.

Jared 09-11-2003 05:21 PM

Re:HELP: Need ideas on turboin' a Sentra SpecV

I'd take it in for the recall asap before you have problems. On the 3rd gear fix, you'll probably get a completely new tranny. Last one I worked on, Nissan told me there were no internal parts available for the 6speed yet, just to replace them as units.
