Help me identify this turbo

I recently got a small Garrett turbo off eBay. It looks perfect for my project (a small, air cooled motorcycle). But I need to identify the turbo so I can find a rebuild kit, and I'm not having much luck.

Center section:
oil cooled only with cooling fins, stamped "433274-1", also stamped "BSF" (I think, I can't read this stamp clearly)

Compressor:
Stamped Garrett, AR33, and either BSK4, or 8SK4

Turbine:
Stamped Garrett, AR36, 15D7, and some more markings that are hard to make out.

Thanks for any info.

Re: Help me identify this turbo

yes it is. i'm looking to turn a 40hp dirtbike (Honda XR650L) into a 70 hp bike and this is the size turbo I need. Now I just need to rebuild it. There's a good chance it's off a small diesel engine like a bobcat or a generator.

Any guesses or suggestions about where I can get more info?

Turbo on a dirt bike...sounds like a good way to kill yourself. I used to ---- myself up regularly on a n/a 2 stroke...I believe you're talking about a 4 stroke though, right??

that gt1544 looks real close. I wish I could match the CHRA number with a model number.

What actual turbo do they use on most sport bike applications? Would those not work also on a dirt bike or not because they dont move as much air? :1

Tis a gt15

Re: Help me identify this turbo

A rebuild is going to cost you more than you can get a good used one for. They use a very specific type of bearing and it looks like the compressor wheel is owned. Rebuild kit is over $100 and comp wheel is at least $150. Not to mention the turbine wheel is probably toast. At best you'll have to get it straightened and polished which is another $50 at least. So get ready to spend $300 if you want it to be runnable.

The GT12 is common for smaller bikes, but it has a water cooled center and my bike is air cooled and I don't have room to add intercoolers and a radiator. My other options are an aerodyne (way too expensive) and an IHI RHB52 VL8 (from a Lancia Dedra) which I can order from Europe for a little over $800. So a $300 rebuild would not bug me too much as long as I know I am ordering the right parts.

Re: Help me identify this turbo

So is a rebuild kit going to be the same for all GT15's?

couldn't you buy a decent used one for less then $300?

You show me a decent used turbo for a 70hp application with an oil-only cooled center section for less than $300 and I'll buy it. And by "decent" I don't mean Preusse. I don't want a crap-ass turbo.

Smith-02 11-01-2008 12:24 AM

Re: Help me identify this turbo

doesnt ------- matter what the center section is. all turbos are oil lubricated, that happens to slightly cool. water cooled is for small turbos on high heat stock turbo cars

Re: Help me identify this turbo

you know you can get one that is watercooled and not hook up the water lines :1

Thanks, chief. But all I want to know is what bearings/seals this turbo uses so I can replace them.

listen ---- face, all i said was "couldn't you" i didn't say you could. i don't know ---- about the turbo you have or any turbos for a 70hp app.
all i know is you have a crap ass turbo. it's fubar, sell that ---- to some retard that is gonna turbo his moped and buy a different one. if you can't figure out what you need to rebuild it then maybe you shouldn't be rebuilding it. also i have a oil and water cooled turbo on my old car and i didn't hook up the water line.

WTF does preusse mean?

Easy Killer, I was serious when I said show me the turbo and I'll buy it. I've been looking for this thing for a long time. I think you were right about it being a GT1544. And I'm still going to fix it because I like fixing ----. Now go take a nap and we'll talk when you're less grumpy.

I had a gt28 on my 686cc Yamaha, and now have a gt20. Still a little too small, will be looking into a gt22 in the near future. Made 70hp at 8psi with the gt28

Would you mind giving me more specifics on your install? What model bike was it? Do you know what HP it made before the turbo? Was your turbo oil, or air/oil cooled? How is the lag? Thanks.

It is a Raptor 700. It made 46.5hp before, that's with K and N, stock pipe without spark arrestor. Turbo was oil cooled. The lag with the GT28 was pretty nasty, I went to the gt20 and it hits very soon in the RPM range. The gt28 probably would have worked better, but I used a stock pipe and mounted the turbo up under the subframe, so it was a direct shot to my throttlebody. I've seen other GT28's used on Raptors, and work real well when the turbo is right after the exhaust ports, I just didn't have the tools to mount mine there with the two exhaust ports coming out at different angles.

Might want to look into making yours EFI if it's the Honda 650, the new Trx700xx comes with EFI you might be able to adapt, it was originally build off the Honda 650 (late model)

Thanks for the info. It sounds like my project will be very similar to yours. Do you know what production years of the raptor come with EFI?

06-09 All have EFI, that can be found on the internet. The throttlebody's are 45mm stock, and can be bore to 48mm, more than enough to feed a 650cc motor. And there are aftermarket Throttle body's available up to 54mm right now, but they're pricey as ----. Your best bet is to fab up a raptor one, or a new Trx700xx Throttle body and fuel pump. The carbs on offroad bikes seem to have alot of trouble, with debri and all. The self correcting closed loop systems make turbo's for us cake
