Help Choosing Remote Turbo for my 4Runner
 

Hello all,

I'm gathering information for a remote mounted turbo for my 4Runner. These Toyota 3.4L V6 (5vz-fe) motors have the option to come from the factory/dealer with the TRD Supercharger kit, and they seem to be able to run 7psi just fine, so I'm planning on running 7 psi with my remote turbo. I'm not looking to make a ton of HP here. I just want something that spools quick for when I'm offroading, or towing. The stock fuel system can handle 7 psi, so I won't be looking to make any more than that.

This will be my first turbo project. I've spent the past several days learning how to read compressor maps, and have been trying to find the best turbo for my application. I found a turbo calculator at http://www.squirrelpf/turbocalc/ and I've been using it to get a general idea of what turbos I should be looking at, however I decided to post here as well in order to gather some real, "practical" information from those who have done this before.

Here are my inputs into the calculator:

Target Power: 250HP
Engine size: 3.4 L
Target A/F: 12:1
BSFC: 0.51
Max Intercooler Loss: 1psi (I figure being a remote mount, it'll probably lose a PSI or so. Accurate?)
Pressure Reference: 14.7 PSI (I'm close to sea level)
Engine Redline: 5500 RPM @ 87% Vol. Efficiency (I don't know if my VE numbers are accurate or not. It's a 4 valve per cylinder motor, so I hope they are)
Peak Power: 4800 RPM @ 90% Vol. Efficiency
Max Boost: 3600 RPM @ 93% Vol. Efficiency (I used my max torque RPM for this one)
Min Boost(??????): 2200 RPM @ 89% Vol. Efficiency (I'm guessing this is when I want to start seeing boost?)

And here are some of the turbos that *look* like they would be a good match. But again, I'd like some advice from the people who have the real-world experience.

From from what I can tell, the last one seems to be a real winner. What do you guys think?

The TD05 is also a turbo in that size range and used on the many Mitsubishi Eclipse running around, lots of inexpensive ones on eBay. It has a 2.5" diameter inlet to the turbine which may be what your exhaust pipe is to begin with.

I've noticed lately that the turbo calc on SquirrelPF's website isn't always accurate. At least the graphs anyways. Check out the last compressor map in my original post. The Pressure Ratio should be around ~1.5, yet it's way above that on the Mitsu TD04 17C map.

So for the reason posted above, I'm discarding the Mitsu TD04 17C from the list of turbos considered.

I'm probably gonna go with a Garrett T3/T04E 57 trim. I founda used one local for $300.

3076R in a T3 .63 housing will work very well for your goals..

same spec. 3.4 4x4 5-speed manual trans. looking for off idle response, the rpm's rarely ever go over 4500.
looking at this turbo, unless someone has other thoughts.

clownmeat (yotatech) built remote 4runner system using the .57, however he says after driving it a while he would prefer something smaller for faster spool.

thoughts? my choices are used units off oem vehicles, and cxracing turbos (which seem to be relatively reliable at 8psi) boost will be limited to 7psi.

being remote adds to lag of any turbo so I am having a difficult time sizing for it, there are few things to correlate it to, towing and hill climbing are priority, not 0-60 or 1/4 mile times.

remote is only option I will consider due to having to remove it all every two years for emissions, so I know that there are 100's of people dying to tell me how stupid and inefficient and unreliable this setup will be, I have read all of these opinions so it isnt really the info I am asking about, but if you must, it is an open forum.

Yeah, I'm just now getting started on the build. Life's been busy the past year. Started a new job, got married in September, etc. Progress has been slow. The nature of my job has me in a company apartment 300 miles away from home. Trying to do this turbo project in an apartment complex sucks. On the occasional weekend that I come home, I get too busy visiting family and friends to get anything done with the turbo.

I ended up with a 57 trim 0.63 A/R. It's currently sitting in the back of the 4Runner. I've also got a 44mm TiAL wastegate, and a lot of misc. stuff.

I seriously looked at the CX Racing kit you linked, but being that my 4Runner is my daily driver, I don't want to risk cracked manifolds from the dubious quality that I've heard about. Instead of doing a rear mount, I'm doing a low-mount, with the turbo bolting to the header collector. Should have less lag than a full on rear mount, and I don't have to worry about ripping the turbo apart when off-road. I was hoping that mounting it at the header collector, it would be high enough to gravity drain the oil back to the pan, but it's not. I was really wanting to avoid utilizing a scavenge pump, but it looks like I'm going to have to. Oh well.
