help choosing a new turbo for my setup
stock d16y8. the greddy turbocharger just isn't tooting my whistle anymore. It starts to fall off in psi at the top end of the rpm band at 9psi on the wastegate. I want a turbo that can handle it easily and then be good for about 20psi when I build the internals.
say all turbos are exactly the same except for wheel sizes, which would be better? .42/.48 .42/.63 .60/.63 .57/.48 .50/.63 I still want relatively quick spooling but I also want a turbo that will laugh at 9psi and pump out 20psi under full boost to redline when I finally get that far. |
Re:help choosing a new turbo for my setup
nobody has any insight? I figured if anyone has played around with different turbos on D-series engines it had to have been some of you :-[ :'(

Re:help choosing a new turbo for my setup
any of the first 2 in a 60 trim should be good.
I don't have to tell you that you're going to sacrifice spool time for high RPM power. ;D |
Re:help choosing a new turbo for my setup
but if I kept the exhaust housing ratio at .48 (isnt the TD04 on the greddy kit .48 on exhaust side?) won't the spool time be the same?
it'll just have a bigger air mover on the compressor side pushing more air so it could handle more air volume right? this is the thing that always confuses me... |
Re:help choosing a new turbo for my setup
larger turbine a/r's = less backpressure and more power
|
Re:help choosing a new turbo for my setup
back pressure exists because the exhasut stream isn't clear...there is a turbine wheel in the way.
I would get a .48 60 trim . |
Re:help choosing a new turbo for my setup
.60/.63, bbka has one and it supposedly pulls hard. his number are pretty impressive also on his d series

Re:help choosing a new turbo for my setup
ok, so as long as I kept the exhaust housing at .48 it will spool up around 3k or so???
wont it run out of steam with a .48 exhaust housing at around the same rpm that the greddy turbo runs out at?? or does the .60 or whatever compressor housing a/r ratio negate that?? |
