GT28R upgraded to GT28RS

as above really...got hold of a cheap gt28r turbo off a s15 which is going on my mk1 golf project which has a 20 valve turbo engine from a audi a3 sport. Anyway the turbo's good for 310bhp i believe. Anyway if in the future i want a little more power can the gt28r be upgraded to rs spec say the gt2860r or can i put a bigger compressor wheel in if the turbine casings are not compatible.

thanks, Kully :)

Yes, it's possible to uprade a gt28R into a gt2860rs.
The hot side is the same. only the compressor side is bigger.
Yes, of course, in order to put a larger compressor wheel, replacement or overboring of the compressor housing to fit that new wheel will be necessary as well as rebalancing the rotatin assembly and since it's used, freshening up the bearings and seals will be a must.

Thanks blaast

If i was to upgrade by fitting the bigger casing where would i get one from and how much, also how much would the compressor wheel cost? Can you get hold of these?

thanks, kully

Contact garrett.

Find a distributor close to you. Atp turbo is nice to deal with and pretty good about answering emails in a timely manner.

Forced performance would have no problem modifying your compressor housing to accept the larger wheel. There site is www.forcedperformance.com. I've dealt with them before. A bit on the high side but they do quality work and you get what you pay for. Real nice people.

Majestic turbo will hook you up as well.

So you're saying just to pop some new ball bearings in and re-balance it? WTF mate. Your turbos aren't even re-balanced, so you're talking out your ass on this one my friend. Oh I know you'll respond like I'm the dumbest ----------er known to man and you're the king of turbos, but if you can seriously rebuild ball bearing turbos by simply popping in new ball bearing assemblies and re-balancing it; why does Garrett recommend a whole new CHRA? Not to mention that milling a compressor housing out to accept a larger wheel only works on some turbos. A lot of the time the compressor housing walls are too thin and boring them to accept a larger compressor wheel causes them to either have major issues with structural integrity or more. Every time somebody says anything about a turbocharger you're always there to tell them they're wrong and spit out some tech info and regurgitate turbocharger part codes, but your product is shady and this information is now questionable.

What size AR do you have on that GT28 now? I'm looking to trade my turbine side off my gt28, mine is a .49

Re: GT28R upgraded to GT28RS

I don't know what the ar is i'll have a look later.

But if i have to buy a new CHRA to upgrade i won't think i'll bother as the cost of buying and fitting a CHRA will work out more than a new turbo. It'll be cheaper to buy an GT2871R. Unless i can get away with buying a compressor wheel and housing. This is a daily ride so maybe 300bhp is enough and im getting al carried away :S

thanks for all the help

kully
