Default Getting ready to buy my charge piping..... Advice please!!!

Haha, you guys are seriously gonna hate me until i get this whole project together, yeah im a damn turbo noob.....

but for real, you guys are the best with helpnig me out....

my setup so far is:
d15b7
std mani
homemade adapter plate
14b
and jrc intercooler and the car is an EG

now for my charge piping i have a few questions... so here we go....

1: should i go stainless so my ---- dont rust, or should i go with the cheaper steel and save some money if i go with the steel, would painting it a nice flat grey keep it from rusting

2: do you guys still recomend going 2.5" ID piping? what are the benifits i know i will have more lag, but will it provide me with better flow with the consistency of the jrc 2.5" inlets/outlets,. and will it make more, or less top end power?

3: the 14b has a very small compressor outlet hole... 1.5" or less i think .... whats the best way to get from the 1.5" to the 2.5"(if i go with that) without loosing flow and velocity ( cause we all know piping is all about consistency usualy)

4: how many bends will i need, and what radius for the eg? i was thinking about 7 90 degree bends, on 45, and 5' of striaght piping would be perfect... but i have no clue what the right radius should be ....

ok, thats it for now... i promise once i get everything all bolted on ill leave u guys alone and start harrasing everyone over on the uberdata forum!

Joe

1) I used steel pipes and just painted them black

2) I went 2" to intercooler then 2 1/2 from intercooler to IM

3) You should measure it again, I'm pretty sure it's 2". For this you can use a transitional coupler to go from 2"-2 1/2". Yuo can use the cheapo ones from home depot.

4) As for pipes I used 3 180 and a straight but this all depends on how your turbo is postioned. This is with a CCA style cooler.

Tuner Toys has a new "kit" of bends that will provide you with enough bends to do your piping how ever you want. Most "steel" is aluminized steel that resists rust, but just for good measure, paint them.

You're thinking about it waaaaaaaay too much...

The outlet diameter on my turbo was 2" and the inlet on my intercooler is 2"... So I put 2" pipe between them.

But, the outlet on my intercooler was 2" and the throttle body inlet is 2-1/2"... Oh no! Crisis Alert!!! Ha ha...

I put a slicone reducer on the outlet of my intercooler that went from 2" to 2-1/2" and that was that. Air flow and velocity and all of that crap is for the birds. If you're working on gaining a few hundreths of a thousandth of a second, then yeah, you might be concerned about it. But for an HMT setup, just try and make it as smooth as possible without stressing out about it too much.

Any mandrel bent steel will work fine. Mine's been on my car all year, washed and not a speck of rust. Might paint it, but I like my steel/black coupling look.

As far as sizing, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND YOU TAKE A WEEKEND AND DO A TEST FIT. Mount the turbo, manifold and intercooler and measure that bad boy out. I made a little sketch of mine, got general lengths and (over)estimated the degree of my bends. I got away with ordering 3 total...

Yeah the aluminized JC bends are pretty nice with concerns to rust. I have had some extra cutoffs sitting in my garage for over a year in a moist environment and they haven't shown one sign of rust. Although its nice for rust protection, it makes it a little more difficult to weld. Make sure you grind your welds down to look for cracks. I had a buddy of mine who is a professional and was using $1000 mig at first, and peices of the aluminumized ---- would contaminate and leave bubbles or hairline cracks after grinding down. Had to pull out the $10,000 tig to get it done perfect. I know on a HMT you probably can get away with putting a fatty bead down, but if you want it done right, be careful and check. On low temp pipes its not as serious, but if your doing this on downpipe or exhuaust its much more important.

As for size, I am using 2.25 for my piping, and I ran it as short as possible. About 3.5 feet total length plus IC width. Picture is before flat black paint. Make sure to clean out the inside of the pipes VERY GOOD. Sandblasting would be great, but at least soak in degreaser, run a rag through, and high pressure air. You don't want any metal chunks lurking around in there when you start the car up. Same with used intercoolers, clean that ---- out before you install.

Go to JCWhitner, eBay, Summit, places like this. The bends are usually 180, 90, or 45. Just put your IC in and then decide how you have to get the pipe in ther.
