general custom kit questions...

yes folks, i read and read and read... but alas, everything is pretty much honda specific so i figure i might be able to get away with asking these couple questions anyway.

i have a bone stock bluetop 4age in my corolla gts, ssautochrome turbo manifold with t3 flange, t3 turbo .48/.46 i believe, and 8 inches of downpipe...

my questions are...

when idling the turbo doesnt spin. im wondering if its because of it being freshly rebuilt? if i pull the throttle even the slightest but it will spin, and while driving it really howls. im not terribly worried, but im wondering if this is common.

next question is in regard to oil lines... i have a ghetto rigged feed and drain and sprayed oil out of the back of the turbo, sorta fixed it with a larger drain line and a needle valve in the feed line... the turbo would emit a little bit of smoke comming off of ~3/4 throttle but otherwise no billowing and no leaking. well i finally game in and ran -4an for the feed and -10an for the drain... from any members experience, will i run into any smoking or leaking problems with this setup without installing a restrictor?

and lastly, my turbo has the adjustable rod on the internal wastegate. i had it where it felt like it was preloaded, and it made little to no boost... loosening it will raise my boost pressure, correct? i know that i should just get in and try it out, but the car is down while im waiting on an AN fitting for my fpr.

any help would be appriciated.

Re: general custom kit questions...

well bigger turbos dont usually spin on idle, and yea turbos tend to be loud, and your oil drain fitting might be below the actualy oil level in the pan causing a back up of oil which causes smoking.

Re: general custom kit questions...

NO spin at idle, don't worry
Oil line, all depends on the PSI of your motor
Less preload=less power.

Re: general custom kit questions...

If a turbo spins faster than a ceiling fan at idle it's probably too small. You don't need that much pressure to the turbo. Some people say 10-20 lbs. I'd say it's more like 5-10 lbs

Tough-guy 10-17-2006 10:23 PM

Re: general custom kit questions...

BTW the preload is the amount of clamping force on the wastegate flapper holding it shut. more preload=more positive sealing, boost is a function of when the w/g "cracks

Re: general custom kit questions...

for the oil drain problem... the corollas come with a factory oil cooler that has a drain on the pan, so i just drained o there... well its pretty small so i put a -10an fitting at the same exact level on the pan in hopes it will fix the problem. ill make sure to get back to this thread once i find out for sure... and thanks for the reassurance on the turbo not spinning, i figure at idle my engine just isnt pumping enough exahaust to spin the thing.

oil pressure while hot is ~35/40 and it will reach 75psi at redline 7500/7800rpm... thats at the engine, i figure the -4 dumping into a relatively giant -10 will be able to keep pressure at the center section down.

so loosening the actual rod that attatches to the wastegate flapper will lower my boost? and tightening the rod (righty tighty) will raise my boost pressure?

also... is JBweld sufficient for mounting a bov? my local exhaust shop lays some nasty booger welds and i only trust them on my exhaust.

also, thanks for the quick replys

Re: general custom kit questions...

75 psi at the engine might be alright(???) 75 at the turbo is way too effin' high. and jb weld is not sufficient to hold the boost spikes produced by turbo and closed throttle body. That is on of thise areas I don't recommend you do ghetto-style.

Get a inline restrictor they can be bought from Hydrualics shops or online at ATP turbo etc.I have JB welded BOV's on no problem holding 12-15psi on a T3 all day.The quality of the weld mix and apllication comes into effect here as well.------- awesome car that is tits. :y

ive got a boost sensitive fuel pressure regulator and 4agze (365cc) injectors. i think two of the injectors are stuck though so im on the stock 195s... so im keeping the boost way down when i get it running. i also have a wideband o2 sensor for when i turn up the boost a little.

thanks again for all the compliments. ill get some better pictures as soon as i mount my front bumper again. youre never going to believe that i painted this car for under 20 bucks hahaha

Whoah. i love that car...
it's incredible what a dozen of flat black stove paint cans can do !!

10AN for your return should be perfect.

don'T attempt to adjust your boost through the actuator rod. This adjustment is JUST for insuring proper closure of the flapper and boost should be adjusted through a boost controller.

Nice, that car looks BAD ASS, what year? pretty solid looking setup too, Kinda funny tho in that pic of the turbo it looks like you need to plate over the hole in the mani for the external wastegate.

turbo4age 10-18-2006 08:12 PM

Re: general custom kit questions...

i think my turbo is no good... for some reason its just oozing oil out of the center section on the exhaust side im going to pull it and make sure all of the bolts are tight. i hooked up my pressure regulator and everything and now i have to wait til it cools down so i can pull the turbo.

why would it be leaking from the center section on the exhaust side? does oil actually get into the exhaust housing?

the car is an '85 corolla gts. i built a block off plate for the wastegate after that pic, you can kinda see it in another.

Re: general custom kit questions...

THere'S nothing wrong with using a used turbocharger for a HMT project but in order to avoid having to install it TWICE, it's always recommended to have it profesionaly rebuilt first.

oil is leaking out the turbine side because that'S the place were all t3 turbos start to leak when they go bad. There'S no "SEAL" to prevent that from happenning, just a piston ring around the shaft and on a USED turbo with shaft play and/or clogged with carbon residues, that piston ring quickly wears out, causing the notorious turbine-end oil leak that is so common to all t3 turbos.

if your compressor is a 0.42 a/r, it may actually be just a 40 or 45 trim and those are good for less than 200HP so if you're trying to make more than that with your turbo, it will keep failing on you. IMO, you must make sure you have at least 50 or 60 trim compressor if it's for a performance application. THe 0.48 a/r stage 1 turbine is acceptable for sure.

Re: general custom kit questions...

well i purchased the turbo as "rebuilt". i took it apart and the oil seal (ring) was scored and so is the surrounding surface. i took a very very fine wire brush on my dremel and cleaned out the material that was in there and took a good ring i had from another turbo and fit it in there... the deformation of the metal is oh so slight, but it still catches the ring slightly so im going to assume its just going to coumpound the problem if i put it back together like that, and not fix itself. there is absolutely no play in the shaft also. i did take a look at my return line and for some reason i couldnt find any oil... as in oil went into the turbo but didnt leave from the return, this is the first time this happened. could it be crankcase pressure? the fitting is at the same level as the factory return for the oil cooler so its not backing up.

i looked at your site, blaast, and i may pick up a t3 from you... do you carry the .060 oil restrictors as well? my goal for this engine is 200rwhp, which is about ~240 crank. spool up doesnt have to be at 2500rpm as i rev to 7500... so id like to size it with a little room for more power in the future.

hahaha i would see the smoke coming up as i slowed down and just shut the car off. i only have about 6 inches of downpipe so the smoke would come out of the hood.

its gonna be all better in a week though, i just bought a new turbo with everything else ive needed from blaast. i cant wait to get it in and running.

Re: general custom kit questions...

okay folks... my turbo will be here on friday and im looking for a coolant source for the turbo. is there a certain amount of coolant that has to pass through? or does it just need to be present and circulating? i took out all of my heater lines and the two lines to the throttle body when i put this engine in the car. is there any way to tap into the radiator hoses? or can i tap into the block? if i tapped into the block where would i end up dumping the coolant to?

any and all help is appriciated.

sirclay 10-30-2006 05:19 PM

Re: general custom kit questions...

Dont tap into it, just put it inline with the "circut" Like this:

coolant line turbo coolant line
=========( O )========

Not like this:

tee coolant line turbo coolant line tee
I==========( O )==========T
=========================================

If that makes any sence lol

BLAAST 10-31-2006 05:53 AM

Re: general custom kit questions...

Sirclay is right, you just stretch one existing water hose to pass it in the turbo.

Re: general custom kit questions...

Well i went to the track lastnight... my best time stock NA was 16.6 at 85mph and lastnight i went 14.8 at 95 with a horrible 2.3 60ft. i dynoed it the night before and it made 150rwhp and 156rwt at a rich 11 to 1 afr and only 6psi.

boost controller is in the mail... i have plenty of fuel left so ill turn up the boost and see what she will do.
