Front Mount Heat Exchanger for H20->Air IC
 

hi.

i've got a turbo project i've been working on for a while now. should have some photos up soon enough to share.

it's a 1975 bmw 3.0 cs with a 3.4 liter sohc six cylinder. i've got a custom intake with an integrated water to air intercooler. i'm trying to find a good front mount heat exchanger to run the water through prior to induction into the secondary copper heat exchanger that's in the intake.

i have two different a/c condensers that appear as though they would be perfect. one is a tube and fin style, the other is a flat tube and fin style. both have 1/2" id inlet/outlet - same as my jabsco 15gpm liquid pump. both have aluminum fins.

does anyone here have experience with using this type of heat exchanger in a water to air intercooling system. most of the literature i read suggests a tranny or oil cooler. i have a few problems with these options, generally stemming from their low surface area and volume. the larger the volume of your water circuit, the better and longer it cools the intake charge.

if i can find a physical way to put one condenser in front of the radiator and the other under the car with a duct to feed it, i'll certainly go that direction with this...

Jason either one of those will work great.. What about adding a small resevoir also to help hold extra water?

Where did you get the pump and how much was it?

right on. just wanting to ask some folks who'd know before i start figuring out the piping.

as for the pump, i got it off ebay from a guy who has a sbc powered 911 porsche and a supercharged miata. he's a spearco rep. i'd get on ebay and type in jabsco bilge pump or something of the sort.

as for the reservoir, i'm one step ahead of ya. a 1 gallon junior dragster fuel cell now occupies my trunk for that purpose. i'm putting the pump & the reservoir in the trunk, running boston weatherhead (crimp fit hydraulic lines with nitrile interior) lines up to the exchanger and back to the trunk. that should provide some more liquid volume to the system as well.

here's a photo of the trunk. i've got a website but it's in a state of disarray so i need to reorganize it prior to posting a link. right now it says i'm building a twin rotomaster rm-60 setup....;-) which i have, but i have no intention of running (on this car at least, perhaps shoehorned into a gutted drag race only 2002 hatch).

oh, and the jabsco pump wasn't more than 90 bucks or so. not bad for fifteen gpm.
